I think Melo is going to have to proove he is worth a max deal this season first before he is going to get a max extension. Supposedly, he has been working hard this season and it would be nice to see him come back successful again after a some what dissapointing sophmore season. Carmelo still hasn't reached his potential, if he stays hungry he is going to get his max deal.
He has to prove that he can do more than just score, to earn a max extension. He's definitely got the potential and the skills to earn one, but another year like last season will make it a tough decision for Denver.
I agree with B-22 in that Melo's extension rides upon how well he plays this season...if he can prove hes more than just a scorer, then he'll get it...I'd say if Melo averages 20, 5, and 4, then he should be worthy of a max contract...

He may lead the team in scoring, but I wouldn't call him a franchise player. The Nuggets are a lot like the Pistons in the sense that everyone can score. The problem is that Melo doesn't really do much other than score. For that reason, they could easily let him go and bring in someone else.
Anthony needs to start playing defense and become a better passer before being worthy of a maximum contract. He is a great scorer but his outside shooting is still not as good as it should be, and he needs to continue to stay out of trouble. The way he has bonded with Karl is encouraging, but like others said, he will need to prove himself. Right now, he's a $50 mil kind of guy.
I dont think he's worth the max, at least not yet. He is an excellent scorer but other than that pretty mediocre in all areas of his game. In the NBA today there are alot of guys who can score a ton of points but the ones who do more get max deals and Melo really hasnt done much to prove hes worth it.

I would say at this point Melo doesn't deserve the max, however a lot of people will probably take potential into the mix and that could change one's perspective. If think he needs to improve his jump shot.
Giving Melo the max is similar to giving Michael Redd the max: he doesn't deserve it, but he's so vital to his team that it has to be done to ensure that the team doesn't lose a very good player. Melo has been, in my estimation, the anti-LeBron. He's got ridiculous talent, but he doesn't use it. Is he lazy? He might be. He should be better right now than he is. He needs to decide whether he's going to be a great player or whether he's going to just rest on the laurels of being a #3 pick who scores 20 per game and nothing more for the rest of his career.
yeah For some reason I seem to think that Melo's career path will be similar to Nomar Garciapparra, huge potential early on but then settling in to good but not great seasons. If Melo suffers a somewhat major injury in the near future I question his ability to rebound from it. Melo= All star this year however--he does not deserve the max..he has not yet proven that he is a franchaise player who will constantly contribute nice points, and be an all-star
