The 22-year-old player wept as he hugged his parents and relatives after he was sentenced. Moments later, he was handcuffed and escorted a block down the sidewalk to the county jail.

Reading from notes, Pierce apologized to the victim and blamed himself for what happened.

"Not a single day goes by that I don't think about how things could have been different," Pierce told the judge. "Truly, deep down in my heart, I am sorry for my actions."

Pierce pleaded guilty in August to third-degree burglary, a felony, and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, false imprisonment and fourth-degree criminal mischief -- all misdemeanors.

Judge Gregory Hulse gave Pierce a five-year suspended sentence on the burglary charge. But Hulse sentenced Pierce to two years in prison on the assault charge and one year each for false imprisonment and criminal mischief, ordering the sentences be served concurrently.

With good behavior and completion of treatment as a sex offender, Pierce could be released after serving 11 months, said Fred Scaletta, a corrections department spokesman.

Pierce has 30 days to appeal his sentence, but lawyer Alfredo Parrish said he would advise Pierce not to do so.</div>

Got what he deserves. He got plenty of chances, and plenty of people tried to help him, but he kept screwing up. Too bad, but this is what had to be done.

He got what he deserved. He chose to do what he did, and has to pay the consequences. He was given plenty of chances, but if you continue to screw up like he did, eventually you'll get what's coming to you, and that's what's happening here.

I really hope that he comes back and plays in the NBA one day. I'm not standing up for what the guy did, but he was by far my favorite player his freshman year; his game was very entertaining, amazingly quick and amazing handles. Honestly, I might take him on the Grizzlies over Bobby Jackson or Damon Stoudamire. He could be a solid NBA player if he just got his head straight.

I hope NOT. The NBA has enough criminals and ball hogs. Keep the jerk out of our lives.

It's the NBA, not the papacy. They take the best basketball players, and I think that Pierre Pierce definitely fits into that category. I'm not sure if I'd really call him selfish either, as he averaged 4.2 apg in the games he played last season. I realize that he takes a lot of shots, but if they're going in and the Hawkeyes are winning, then why shouldn't he take those shots? Just look at what he was doing before he was kicked off the team. He was averaging 17.8 ppg on 48% shooting, and his team had a 15-5 record (12-1 to start the season) and were ranked on and off all season. He had games like the game he had against Ohio State in January where he would only record one assist, but would score 31 points, grab five rebounds, and record three steals, and you also have to look at his shooting numbers; he was shooting 60%! Some of the best point guards in the NBA are shoot-first type players; there's nothing wrong with that. It's good to be selfish sometimes.
