<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: It was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership." ? John Kenneth Galbraith
What a coincidence. The major anxiety for the Jazz just happens to be leadership.
Wonder what John Kenneth Galbraith would say to that.
With the season beginning today, leadership remains atop the Jazz checklist. Their hope is that rookie Deron Williams will eventually take care of that. But until then, who will carry the team? Soft-spoken veteran Matt Harpring? Enigmatic forward Carlos Boozer? Irrepressible optimist Andrei Kirilenko?
This much is obvious: The Jazz still don't have a fully developed leader. They need someone like Mel Gibson in "Braveheart" who can run up and down the line of warriors, inspiring them to battle. In the movies, this is where the burly action hero ? or even the unassuming bookworm ? steps forward and assumes leadership. In the NBA, it's more complicated.
You first need experience, talent, respect of others and, of course, starting minutes. That's a combination in short supply in Utah.
So what do the Jazz do until Williams knows exactly what he's doing, call Rent-a-Hero?
Quick, someone get John Stockton on the speakerphone.
Since Stockton retired in 2003, leadership has been elusive. The Jazz have done what they could. Jerry Sloan has worked the angles from the bench and become noticeably more patient with his young players. But out on the court, it's been a different matter. Former Jazz guard Raja Bell came closest to filling the leadership vacancy with his fiery challenges. But Bell didn't always start and sometimes didn't play enough minutes to lead.</div>

I think Memet Okur can be the leader of this team until Deron Williams is ready. He's led his national team from Turkey the last few seasons so he has the experience. Whether the team rallies around him or not will depend on the level he plays at this season.
