LAKE FOREST, Ill. (Aug. 30, 2005) -- In a span of five days, Chad Hutchinson went from starting quarterback to out of a job.

Hutchinson, demoted on Aug. 28 to fourth string after two shaky outings as the Chicago Bears' starter, was cut Aug. 30, two days before the final preseason game.

Hutchinson had moved into the starter's role when Rex Grossman broke his ankle Aug. 12, but he didn't produce much in two starts.

He was 5 for 8 for 40 yards with two interceptions and three sacks against the Colts in his first start. He struggled even more last week against Buffalo, throwing two more interceptions -- one that was returned for a touchdown -- getting sacked three more times and completing just 3 of 14 passes.

On Aug. 28, coach Lovie Smith turned the starter's role over to rookie Kyle Orton and elevated Jeff Blake to backup and Kurt Kittner became the third quarterback.

Hutchinson practiced with the team Aug. 30. He was not available for comment. The announcement he was cut came 2? hours after the Bears had ended their practice.

He was 20 of 42 for 211 yards with four interceptions and no TD passes and a quarterback rating of 23.1 in the preseason.

Hutchinson, who pitched briefly in the major leagues with the St. Louis Cardinals and is the brother-in-law of Chicago Cubs second baseman Todd Walker, was signed last season after Grossman tore a knee ligament in the third week of the season.

After Jonathan Quinn and Craig Krenzel had their chances as starters, Hutchinson got his and posted a 1-4 record in the final five games. He also started nine games as a rookie for the Cowboys in 2002, going 2-7. He was waived by the Cowboys in 2004.

Grossman, hobbling off the practice field on crutches, told reporters he hoped to back somewhere around Thanksgiving.

Wow thats the most generous A bears fan has ever been to the Pack! I give you props for that! But I see it anywhere from8-8 to 10-6 dpedning on how quickly the O-line jells and how quickly the D gets it together.
