<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Rob Babcock has positioned himself to make a huge splash 18 months from now: he'll have money and roster spots galore to go out shopping as an NBA general manager putting the finishing touches on his franchise remake. But will he have a coach? Sam Mitchell, trying to turn a young, inexperienced, small roster into something that can be competitive every night, will have his contract expire after the 2006-07 season, just when Babcock will be out from under more than $20 million (all figures U.S.) in salary obligations and ready to make a splash in the free agent market. And while there are those in the organization who privately think the contract disparity is unfair ? Babcock has a year longer left on his deal than Mitchell has on his ? there seems to be no move towards changing things. "If we execute this plan, I'm very confident we'll be around for a long time," Babcock said in a recent interview. "Right now, we're not concerned about his contract or my contract. You focus on (the team improving) and the contract stuff will take care of itself." One of the problems, however, is that the plan has changed since Mitchell was hired to a three-year deal worth about $4 million. No one could have foreseen the franchise taking a step back this season ? younger, smaller, more inexperienced than last year ? and while the losses pile up on Mitchell's record, the general manager can look forward to making the moves he wants either through trades or in the off-season. "It's going to take some growing pains (but) I feel very confident I'm the guy," said Mitchell. "The organization has said to me I'm the guy, I trust them and I think they trust what I'm going to do." After the 2006-07 season, barring any significant trades in between, Babcock will watch the contracts of Jalen Rose ($16.9 million), Morris Peterson ($4.6 million), Eric Williams ($4.2 million), Mike James ($3.7 million), Matt Bonner ($2 million) and Rafael Araujo ($2.4 million) all expire. While some of them may re-sign, and the Raptors will be able to sign Chris Bosh to a contract extension worth more than $10 million a year after this season, Babcock will have unimaginable riches to spend.</div> Source
So basically we are stocking money for the same time all the other teams are to try and sign free agents from the 03 draft. Great, we'll be overpaying for sure.... Doug Smith needs to get a brain and realize that everyone is doing that and those "unimaginable riches" are going to be on a lot of teams books. I'd be willing to leave Sam Mitchell as it stands, but i don't see why we would be in a rush to resign him at the current rate. I think given his experience coaching and our current situation his performance is ok.... but nothing spectacular. He definately needs to improve in the future with the team if he still wants a job...
does he think he can get lebron???? i have no idea if he'll be able to pull it off. but i'll appluad him if he gives it a shot. Darko, melo, dwayne, luke, kirk, peja, rueben patterson, grant hill, d-mase, mags, TJFORD, josh howard, jerry stackhouse. these guys are the bigs of free agency come time to spend for babs! is he gonna attempt to sign em or what??? its gonna be a crazy summer of 07.
The only reason I'd leave Mitchell is because I don't want another coach change, but realistucally, I'm not that big a fan of him as a coach. He doesn't have great defensive execution, offensive exucution is too stagnant, and his rotations are retarded.
too bad we cant do anything at the end of this year because of our cap situation unless babcock pulls an amazing executive of the year type move and somehow moves jalen rose and any other raptor big contracts that expire beyond next year for a contract or contracts that expire at the end of this year here is a list of centres available this coming off season unless they have signed contract extensions that I do not know about: Ben Wallace, Nene, Joel Przybilla, Lorenzen Wright PF/C, Nazr Mohammed, and Michael Olowokandi here is the link for coming free agents restricted, unrestricted and with player or team options http://probasketball.about.com/od/newsrumo...reeagents06.htm
okay lets say if we do trade away Rose for Penny Hardaway and Penny's contract expires this year is there anyway we can go for Nene? and lock him up at C? than our future line-up would be nene/bosh/Charlie/Graham/Jose or Nene/Bosh/Graham/Mo-Pete/Jose or James

People will never wake up to the idea that hiring a new GM or Coach will not solve any problems. None! This team can't be repaired within weeks. Have patience.

Penny Hardaway is no where near as good as Rose, but I guess its all in the contract expiry situation. Other than that, it wouldn't help the team that much.
