when he receive the ball around the post area, he either shoots or drive, when he drive he should do a PRO HOP/HOP STEP like amare always do, this will help him get past his defender possibly get and1 basket... what areas do you think he needs to improve on in the low post??
Yao isn't nearly as mobile as Amare, so I don't think the "pro hop" move will help him much. I think his low post game is pretty solid, actually. He just needs to avoid bringing the ball down and allowing other player's to strip the ball. Hakeem had a killer jump hook move in the lane, and if Yao can master that he'd be virtually unstoppable. Other than that, he's one of the best low post scorers in the game. After Shaq and Duncan, I honestly can't think of a better low post scorer than Yao.
He needs to grab the ball firmly when he backs down. Try to dunk more balls and be just a bit quicker.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting dingking:</div><div class="quote_post">He needs to grab the ball firmly when he backs down. Try to dunk more balls and be just a bit quicker.</div> Agree with you he always shoots it on a fadeaway he should just go for the dunk
he need to stop dribbling the ball. he used to be an 18 foot shooter and i don't see him shooting those anymore?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting subiworld:</div><div class="quote_post">he need to stop dribbling the ball. he used to be an 18 foot shooter and i don't see him shooting those anymore?</div> The system. When you have guards like McGrady and Anderson who take shots on a second's notice, you'll need someone down low to grab rebounds. Yao is our best rebounder. Also, the offense is centered around Yao and he is great at spotting cutters and would command a double-team anytime he catches the ball down low. As for the "pro hop" thing, I don't even know what to say. Why doesn't Shaq or Mehmet Okur do a pro hop? Simply, you need quickness and explosiveness to do it, and traditional centers are often too heavyset to pull off such a move.
I still think Yao could be tougher mentally. This year he is definetly more aggresive from what I saw of him, but I think he could even improve upon that. Yao has potential to be a VERY good player in this league. The hook shot would be a invaluable asset to Yao. Also stick away from rthe fade aways. A center shouldn't be shooting those.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Diesel:</div><div class="quote_post"> Also stick away from the fade aways. A center shouldn't be shooting those.</div> Hakeem did it and he was the best with fade aways dream shake
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Hakeem was doing that in an athletic 6'10 body much more similar to amare's then yao's 7'6" frame.</div> I can also make the argument that someone with an athletic 6-10 body should be dunking it time and time again similar to Amare instead of fading away.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting subiworld:</div><div class="quote_post">from NBA.com info isn't Hakeem 7 foot?</div> No. 6'10 and 3/4.

Yao needs to make his move quicker and not allow his defender to judge position...he needs to just attack the rim and DUNK...no more layups...but I do think his main problem is he takes 4-6 seconds just to make his move because he's seeing how his defender is reacting...he cant allow that...
When he gets the ball, he holds for 3-4 seconds as if he's trying to figure out what is the next move. His defenders use the time to double team him, push him out and try to steal or harass. It makes him so passive and difficult to dribble, spin move, shoot or whatever. He needs to response much quickly and take advantage of his position he strives to get.

Yao sometimes does tend to hold on to the ball for too long before making a move, and that gives the defender time to reposition himself and anticipate Yao's next move. Sometimes, when Yao spins around his defender right off the bat, it leaves the defender rooted to the ground and gets Yao easy free throws at the least, if not an and one play.
yao's problem is holding the ball too long... that gives time for a quick guard like mike biby or tony parker to just steal the ball from him
Yes i know Yao is no Hakeem. What i'm saying is Yao had a good jump shot like Hakeem. What Yao is missing is his reaction time just too slow and he dribble the ball too much.
