<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">CLEVELAND - There was a rare sight on the practice floor at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday: Ira Newble dressed in his workout jersey out there sweating.

Newble, who has missed the entire season thus far with a chronic case of plantar fasciitis in his right foot, took part in his first practice since the second day of training camp, a big step in his return to the lineup. Newble is recovering from a shockwave procedure on the bothersome foot last month.

He took part in most of practice, including contact work, and hopes to be in full practice by next week and back in games within two weeks. Cavs athletic trainer Max Benton said Newble is considered day-to-day.

Just living without pain has been a comfort to Newble, who felt like he was walking around with a marble in his shoe for weeks. The soreness started before training camp and on the second day, Newble landed wrong and aggravated it. He was supposed to be out two weeks, then three, but the pain never got better and neither did the knot in his foot.

``I'd say it was a nine or 10 (on the pain scale),'' Newble said. ``I'd be in extreme pain all day long.''

He underwent the shockwave treatment in Pittsburgh, a procedure so painful he had to be put under anesthesia for it and spent the next week in a walking boot. Now, though, his recovery is nearing an end.

``It has been very frustrating and of course I'm bored,'' Newble said. ``I'm going to be behind on a lot of things and there's not a lot of time to catch up.''

The Cavs and coach Mike Brown could use Newble's defensive presence off the bench. Newble has made a career of being a defense-first role player, exactly the kind Brown has been trying to develop since the start of the season. Once he gets to 100 percent, he figures to demand minutes in Brown's rotation.

``Any time you bring in a guy with his mind-set it can only benefit you,'' said Brown, who also coached Newble when both were with the San Antonio Spurs. ``But I haven't been able to coach Ira yet so I don't know what I'm going to get from him.''

The Cavs will have limited practice time in the next few days. With a back-to-back coming up over the weekend, they likely won't be back out on the practice floor again until Monday. Newble needs the practice time to get familiar with the team's plays, because he's been absent from workouts for more than two months.

The hope is Newble can return during the Cavs' four-game homestand that begins next week.

``I'm going to be behind on a lot of things and there's not a lot of time to catch up,'' Newble said. ``I know I'm not in game shape. I've been working out and in the pool but it is really going to take me some good practices and some games to get me there.''</div>
