The statements were made in an interview published in the Indianapolis Star on December 11, and concerned Artest's desire to be traded to a team other than the Pacers. "Public trade demands by players was a subject discussed at length during collective bargaining negotiations this summer," said Rick Buchanan, NBA Senior Vice President and General Counsel. "The damage caused by these kinds of statements was commonly understood, as was the NBA's intention to hold players accountable for such statements going forwar</div>
Detrimental to the NBA? Never heard this term used before. I thought the fine would have came from the team, and not the league. I'm loving it though, and I hope they fine the rest of the people demanding to be traded. - Skeeta - Chucky Atkins - Marc Jackson - Ruben Patterson Fine all the above $10,000 each and donate it to charity.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting PlaTsanity:</div><div class="quote_post">doubt it they'll fine the players you mentioned shape artest got fined because..well..he's artest</div> agreed vince carter basically admitted he was dogging it in toronto and no-one fined him nothing. artest has a bullseye on his back and david stern has a itchy trigger finger
I agree. It sounded silly to me at first, but I really do think Stern is targeting Artest. If he's going to fine Artest, he has to fine Carter, Atkins, Mourning etc.
This is just wrong. Why does he have to make an example out of Artest? Out off all the players that's demanded trades why did it have to be him? Why couldn't it be Atikins? They need to give Artest a break, seriously.
This rule was decided when the league and in the player's union when deciding on the contracts, age limit e.t.c.
^ Alright then. But I would still like to know why they made the first fine against Artest and not Atkins for example. Unless they fined Atkins but it just never made the headlines... I hope that is the case because it's unjustified that they would fine Artest and nobody else.
I'd do what Stern's doing. Artest is too close to the edge. Think of it this way, Stern only wants to help Artest grow up and become a great representative of the NBA, and not a thug who can do and say whatever's on his mind.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting iwanalik_hunt:</div><div class="quote_post">from everything i`ve read and heard about him he seems an affable intelligent guy</div> Well maybe you need to read/hear some more about him. I have too many problems with the way that Artest handles situations. It's cool if you need to ask for time off...but not to promote a rap album or anything that is a hobby. It's cool if you want to request a trade, but don't go and do a bunch of stupid stuff before you do it, lowering your value. Insult Magic if you want to, but do it to his face or over the phone. Reggie summed it up perfectly, the Pacers have stood behind this dude. No other franchise has a reason to do that for him once he gets traded. They could have easily traded him after the brawl to try and save the image of their franchise. He bit the hand that feeds by attacking the people who pay to see him play, and verbally attacking the people who pay him. He deserves a chance in the league, but he's working hard to mess it up.

Sure, maybe he was wrong about he said about Magic but at the of the day what he is capable of doing on floor outweights those dumb comments. I'm sure that 99% of the NBA GM's will find those comments very irrelevant on as far as it goes on whether they should trade for him or not. If the Magic comments are not what you are talking about, then what is he doing that's lowering his value?
First off I don't agree with people saying that Artest shouldn't insult Magic because Magic is a "legend of the game". Magic's status is irrelevant in the issue. However, most GM's will see it that way, because Magic is highly respected. They don't want that kind of "disrespect for a legend" brought into their franchise. Sure, what he does on the floor outweighs his comments, but not in the minds of teammates or a general manager. If stats were all that people cared about the Pacers would have ignored his trade request. Artest never came out and said that he was dogging it, we all know that he's still having a great year. The reason that they are trading him is because he's hurting chemistry, regardless of how well he is producing. Why should a potential playoff team give up one of their best players (Peja, Lewis), or a player with potential (Iggy) just to take a risk that Artest will come in and mess it up?
