The MVP won't go to anyone who doesn't at least have a top 3 record. In the history of the league It has never gone to a guy who's team has't been great. Think Wilt was the last guy to win MVP when his team didn't have a very good record.

Duncan may get It If the Spurs get 56-60 wins, his impact is greater than his stats.

Dirk is the MVP. And why everyone else cant be.

Billups- What's the first line that almost every commentator says in the beggining of the telecast. "The best Starting 5 in the league"

Kobe- When he scores a lot they lose, when he doesnt they win... isnt it supposed to be the other way around?

Brand- He has the same team from last year, added Cassell and then the Clips went off.

Cassell- To much attention on Brand.

Nash- Impossible for him to win it 2 years in a row.

Lebron, Wade- have to much around them and still arent winning.

Duncan- has too much around him although he should win the award every year.

KG- not winning, no publicity, people forget about him.

A.I.- To many up's and downs with the team.

Shaq- Should win every year but, people think he's at an advantage cuz he's fat... I mean huge.

Gasol????????????????????? C'mon shapecity he is not and MVP canidate.

T-mac- he should be competing with Dirk for this prize right now my top 2.

    1. Dirk Nowitzki
    2. Tracy McGrady
    3. Tim Duncan
    4. Shaq O'neal
    5. Steve Nash

Why not? He's the leader of his team this season and they have 14 wins. They've been losing lately, but there was a stretch when Memphis was a top 4 team in the league. He's having a career year in rebounding, assists, and blocked shots. Besides, if PJ Brown could get an MVP vote last year, why can't Gasol get one?

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Avery:</div><div class="quote_post">So let me get this. You're basically saying Tim Duncan should NOT get MVP no matter what because his team lost to the Hawks? What about your boy T-Mac? Let's say the Rockets get everything rolling and everyone is healthy and during a hot streak they end up lossing to the Hawks, would you take his MVP consideration away?</div>

All I am saying is Lebron isn't an MVP candidate in my book. This year or last year. Not even gonna go into detail on that. Whatever else I said after that post doesn't matter. Avery always frustrates the crap out of me though. [IMG]

Gasol...Maybe. If he can continue to win and if he can begin to completely dominate games than he deserves it.

MVP awards shouldn't go to players like Billups imo. The whole team is doing great, and if he missed a game they could still win. MVP=Most Valuable Player {to a team}. Rockets w/o McGrady = crap. Philly w/o AI = crap. Washington w/o Arenas = crap. Dallas w/o Dirk = crap (though not as bad as crappy as Houston).

MVP Award should go to a player whose team needs him to win, and can't win w/o him imo.

What if a player never gets injured, so you have no proof of how his team would do without them?

I think the MVP should go to the best player on the team with the best record. Billups is deserving and playing with great teammates shouldn't take away from his chances. He's their go to player down the stretch and he's responsible for initiating the offense and making sure everyone is getting their fair share of touches.

Gasol ripped on Swift for not being consistant, well he should look at his reflection because to be considered a superstar (which IMO he's not) you have to be consistant. He'll have a dominant game one day maybe two, then stink it up the next two. If he's not considered a superstar meaning up their with the Pierce's, the Iverson's, the Nowitzki's (who said "he's not even that good") he's got to be consistant.

    In the words of Avery.

"Care to elaborate? His team is winning" [when hes on the court], "he is having big individual games and so on. What is he doing wrong?"

lots of time its not gasol that makes the biggest difference in the memphis team... in memphis, u have damon, jones, and boby who all did a terrific job this year... i bet memphis still win with out paul but not as much... with out t-mac we are 0-8, casue we don't have anybody else that is a major difference except for yao... dirk is about the same with the t-mac except that dirk has better players than the rocekts.

Chauncey Billups has been ridiculous this season. He is finding the balance between scoring and passing. That used to be the issue with him, but now he's conquered it. So far, Billups is putting up 19.0 points, and 8.8 assists with only 1.87 turnovers. That A/T ratio (4.72) is #1 in the NBA. His impact as a leader on the Pistons has also improved, too. If you take him off the Pistons, I'm sure his value would be truly seen.

People tend to look at team's winning percentage when deciding MVP. In a way it makes sense. Obviously individual stats don't tell the whole story about a player's value, and we need to look deeper at how his team actually performed.

In my opinion, when trying to determine the value of a player on a given team, it's much more useful to look at how his team does with him on the court versus off the court rather than the team's overall winning percentage.

82games.com provides a couple of statistics that help us in this regard. We can see how much better a team performs, per 100 possessions, with a player on the court versus off the court.

As an example, I'll compare MVP front-runners Billups, Brand, AI, Nash, Kobe, McGrady, LeBron, Dirk, and Duncan:

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"><font color=""Green""><font face=""Courier New"">
    Billups:
    On Court: +11.6 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: +5.3 pts/100 poss
    Net: +6.3 pts/100 poss

    Brand:
    On Court: +3.9 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: -6.4 pts/100 poss
    Net: +10.3 pts/100 poss

    Iverson:
    On Court: +3.4 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: -9.4 pts/100 poss
    Net: +12.8 pts/100 poss

    Nash:
    On Court: +4.5 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: +13.5 pts/100 poss
    Net: -9.0 pts/100 poss

    Kobe:
    On Court: +5.0 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: -7.0 pts/100 poss
    Net: +12.0 pts/100 poss

    McGrady:
    On Court: +5.9 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: -8.9 pts/100 poss
    Net: +14.8 pts/100 poss

    LeBron:
    On Court: +6.9 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: -5.7 pts/100 poss
    Net: +12.5 pts/100 poss

    Dirk:
    On Court: +7.3 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: -4.3 pts/100 poss
    Net: +11.5 pts/100 poss

    Duncan:
    On Court: +11.6 pts/100 poss
    Off Court: -3.3 pts/100 poss
    Net: +14.8 pts/100 poss
    </font></font></div>

In terms of impact, Duncan and McGrady is most valuable out of the bunch based on this stat. Interestingly enough, Phoenix has actually played better relative to opponents with Nash off the court than on the court over the course of the season. Some might argue a player like McGrady should be penalized for missing so many games, and I agree. Also, maybe we care more about how often a team outscores an opponent when a player is on the court versus off the court, rather than the point differential. The following stat takes these factors into account. A "win" counts as the number of games in which a player's team outscored the opponent with him on the court. A "loss" is the number of games where the opponent outscored his team with him on the court. Again, I compare the above players:

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"><font face=""Courier New""><font color=""Green"">Billups:
    18 wins, 4 losses (team record: 20-3 )

    Brand:
    14 wins, 10 losses (team record: 15-9 )

    Iverson:
    13 wins, 11 losses (team record: 13-12)

    Nash:
    12 wins, 11 losses (team record: 15-9 )

    McGrady:
    8 wins, 6 losses (team record: 10-13 )

    Kobe:
    14 wins, 11 losses (team record: 14-11 )

    LeBron:
    13 wins, 10 losses (team record: 14-9 )

    Dirk:
    21 wins, 4 losses (team record: 18-7 )

    Duncan:
    18 wins, 4 losses (team record: 19-6 )
    </font></font></div>

I'd argue that these wins/losses are much more meaningful when considering the MVP race than the team's win/losses. Afterall, a player is responsible for how his team plays while he's on the court. Again, this shows that maybe Nash isn't as valuable to the Suns success this season as many people think.

We should consider a player's individual stats (PER is a good summary stat for this) when deciding the MVP. But additionally, instead of focusing on team win-loss record, people should look at the stats shown above. They're a much better indicator of a player's impact on his team's performance.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting AznxBaller:</div><div class="quote_post">Ask Steve Nash.</div>He only missed seven games last year. Last I knew, 75 games in a year is pretty damn good. As far as MVP candidates go, mine look like this.

    1. Elton Brand: The man is having a HUGE year. You take him out of this lineup, they go nowhere. Cassell won't be nearly as good without him. He makes his guards lives so much easier. He draws the double team and gets Cassell, Maggette, and Mobley open jumpers.

    2. Tim Duncan: Mr. Consistency. He gets it done every night. I don't care how much talent and depth his team has. He makes everyone on the court better just by being there and he puts up stats every night. Very well deserving of MVP right now if it wasn't for Brand having a monster year.

    3. Kobe Bryant: I may be scrutinized for this, but I don't care. He's leading the Lakers to be better than some people may have thought. He's helped people figure out the triangle faster this year. And quite frankly, if it wasn't for his individual performances, the Lakers would be nothing.

    4. Chauncey Billups: Mr. Big Shot is having himself a phenomenal year. Averaging a career high in points (18.8), assists (8.7), and has the lowest assist to turnover ratio in the NBA. He's the rock of that Piston lineup. It may be talent laden and may be the best in the NBA, but he's proving just how good he is, and is having the best season of his career, and you know, hitting a few big shots along the way. For me, it'd be tough to keep him out of the MVP race with the season he's having.

    5. Allen Iverson: Once again, having another great year. He ranks in the top 20 in 24different categories. He's shooting a career high from the floor. He's dropping 7.4 assists. And if that wasn't enough to bar an MVP candidacy, he's got his team in the playoff hunt. They're 13-12 record may not be eye popping, but he's having an amazing season with teammates that are the epitomy of inconsistency. You take him away, the Sixers go nowhere.
