<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">AUBURN HILLS --In years gone by, it was easy to overlook Chauncey Billups.

Oh, he was good. It's just that other point guards were better.

Hence, a trip to the All-Star Game was nothing more than a pipe dream.

    Until this season, that is.

Not only does Billups, the Pistons' starting point guard, deserve to be an All-Star, a case can be made that he also should be voted an Eastern Conference starter by the fans.

For sure, it's a tall order. Last season, LeBron James of the Cavaliers and Allen Iverson of the 76ers were voted starting guards for the East. They're playing well this season, too. But their teams are having average seasons.

Billups, on the other hand, is averaging 19 points and 8.8 assists and has helped the Pistons achieve their best start ever. And if fans base their votes on current play, not players' reputations, Billups would be a starter in Houston on Feb. 19.

"I don't think there's a point guard in the NBA playing better than him right now," Pistons president Joe Dumars said before the Pistons defeated the Trail Blazers, 93-89, Tuesday night. "He has a control of the position that has him playing on a different level."

    The Nash comparison

You can look at Billups the same way many looked at Steve Nash a season ago. Nash's over-the-top play propelled the Suns to an unbelievable 22-3 start, and his effort enabled him to win the league's MVP award.

Just as Nash did with the Suns, Billups' play has propelled the Pistons from very good to great.

That's not to say the Pistons are all about Billups. This is still a team that needs all the parts to function in order to win -- and win big.

But Billups has raised the bar and made the Pistons even more dangerous to oppose.

"My opportunity is different now," said Billups, who had 19 points and 10 assists Tuesday. "I'm called on to handle the ball a lot more and make decisions. I'm definitely comfortable. Whatever system I was going to be in it was just a matter of time and I was going to make myself confortable."

That's what you have to love most about Billups. Many players don't want to take control, don't want the fortunes of their teams to rest on their jumpers. They are inclined to allow someone else to decide the outcome.

Billups, 29, not only wants the big shot, he also can make it.</div>

This whole subject is interesting. How do really rank the PG's? Do we rank guys like Iverson and Francis who really are SG's but just play the PG position or do we rank them by what a PG is suppose to do like pass the ball? But either way you look at it whether it's by best pure point guard or best PG period regardless of what they do at that position, I don't think Billups is #1 on either list, however he is top 3-4 on both lists.

jason kidd ha been fallin gout the race, so it's either Nash or Billups, Billups and Nash both controll offense well, can shoot 3s, are clutch, but Billups has the better D no doubt

Billups has been amazing since he joined the Pistons and just gets better every year. He's no doubt one of the top pg's in the league, but probably not #1.

Since most people don't understand what a PG is I'll just refer to what I'm saying as "running the point".

I think Saunders has put more on Billups to be a fascilitator this season and he's stepped up to the challenge. I love his A/T ratio and I think he's top 5 at running the point this season.

I still think Nash and Kidd are the best. LeBron, when playing PG, isn't too bad either and has great vision of the court.
