TORONTO -- Steve Nash put the Maple Leaf on James Naismith's game this year.

    Nash

Nash, the Phoenix Suns guard and the NBA's MVP, was honored Tuesday as Canada's male athlete of the year by The Canadian Press, winning in a landslide vote. Nash also won the award in 2002.

"If my career has somehow inspired or gained interest in kids across the country, that would be unbelievable to have that sort of impact,'' Nash said from Phoenix. "I think a lot of it is intangible, so I really just try to keep going, and keep trying to improve and enjoy this opportunity I have. I know it won't last forever.''

Nash finished with 366 points and 102 first-place votes in balloting of sports editors and broadcasters across the hockey-mad country. Pittsburgh Penguins phenom Sidney Crosby collected 163 points and 14 first-place votes while the Pittsburgh Pirates' Jason Bay was third with 92 points and five first-place votes.

An exquisite passer with supreme command of the floor, Nash led the Suns' remarkable turnaround and became the first Canadian to be noted the NBA's most valuable player. The Suns went from a 29-53 record to a league-best 62-20.

Nash was born in South Africa, grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, and starred in college at Santa Clara. The California school was the only in the U.S. that offered him a scholarship.

Steve Nash has to be the most exciting player in NBA basketball, besides LeBron James. His ball-handeling skills and his outrageous passing make him one of the best point guards in the league. I don't know of any other Canadian Athlete, period.

Cheers. Wish the rest of the league was the same. Too many bloated egos.

You not kiddıng about the egos.. I have lived abroad ın Europe for almost 3 years and before I moved to Turkey I dıdnt get to follow the NBA like I dıd when I lıved ın Mexıco and even here the games are 1 or 2 days behınd and they dont alwasy show the games I want to see or the most popular ones so I was very much out of whos who ın the league. I never had heard of Steve Nash or Dwayne Wade and etc.. thıs season was all new to me and I had no ıdea he won the MVP and to be honest I wouldnt have known hım ıf he sat besıde me and stıll that maybe the case [IMG] her eın europe football or soccer as we know ıt ıs the kıng of sports!

but lookıng at the games that I have seen I have never seen so many egos on one court and all these one man shows.. Its lıke a contest of who can make the most baskets or somethıng and not a lot of team work and selfısh players.. but when I have seen the 4 phoenıx games (yes fellas only four) I saw thıs long haır guy who I later dıscovered was Steve Nash who had open shots but was always passıng and makıng great passes and I was lıke wow now thats a team player.. and I saw an ıntervıew wıth hım and he never talks about hım only but the team and thats very humble of hım. He ıs now I assume very popular and famous but he seems to be a very down to earth and grounded young man whıch ıs hard to be sometımes when you are ın the spot lıght and money and women and etc.. all around you.. Now Im not a regular follower of the suns and Ive just now strated gettıng back ınto watching the NBA I have been gone for 3 years now so Im just commentıng on what I have seen thus far.. but I thınk he ıs a great player but thats my opınıon...
