<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Memphis_Tigers:</div><div class="quote_post">So your going to tell me that Larry Finch coached the Tigers with out graduating?</div>

Again, you're beating me over the head with something that one of my former teachers said, not something I said. I don't have the numbers, and neither do you, so what's the point of beating a dead horse? By the way, I believe most graduation statistics are based on a six year period, so if Finch got his degree in seven or eight years, then he wouldn't be included. Also, it could have been that there wasn't a player who graduated 18 years after Luckett did. Either way, the point is that Memphis makes very, very poor decisions on the offensive end of the floor.

Not trying to beat you up over it. Just trying to set it straight. No use in a program getting talked about negatively over something that was not true.

Oh, but there's a lot of truth to it, and Memphis does deserved to be talked about negatively. The simple fact that they have a 25% graduation rate now and had a 0% graduation rate before Calipari speaks volumes about their academic standards for their athletes. And anyone who has seen them play knows that they don't make smart decisions on offense. You'll find that kind of talk on ESPN or in Sports Illustrated, not just this forum.

I just know that they have graduated most of their last 11 seniors.

Congratulations to them on accomplishing such an extraordinary feet, but that's really not impressive, and it doesn't take away from Memphis' history of horrible academic standards for their basketball players. It still doesn't say anything about the topic that lead us to this discussion either, the Tiger's decision making.

I just think they shouldn't punish a school for players that transfer or go to the NBA early. Like Scooter Mcfaddon who transfered to UT. Even though he might graduate there, he will be counted for Memphis as not graduating.

Actually, players who transferred or went pro weren't counted against the Tigers in that report, so McFadgon, Wagner, and anyone else who transferred or left early wouldn't be included in the statistics.

The new system the NCAA uses counts transfers and early exits against the school. I think you are reading it wrong

Not according to this article -

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Before this year's report, athletes who turned professional or transferred before graduating counted against a school's graduation rate. That's no longer the case. </div>

Sorry I'm wrong. The guys who entered school from 1995 to 1999 would have all graduated by 2003. I was looking at up until this season they have graduated 8 of their past 11 seniors. Sorry for wasting your time arguing.

It's based on six years, so 2005 would be when they graduated, not 2003.

Yes, but most of the guys graduating in 2005 would have entered college in 2000 or 2001 so they would have not been counted.

Okay, sorry for not being incredibly specific; pre-Calipari you had a 0% graduation rate, between 1999 and 2003, you had 25% of your players graduate. How proud you must be.

As far as your incredible 8 of 11 players statistic (which actually is still unimpressive, especially considering the academic strength of the university and the type of courses a typical player takes), it fails to include Antonio Burks, Chris Massie, and Anthony Rice, three of the Tiger's best players (especially Burks and Massie). Out of those eight players, how many were bottomfeeders and how many were on Burks' level? I know Arhur Barclay graduated, a kid who averaged 2 ppg and 4 rpg in his best season at Memphis.

The only reason I'm picky about the type of players who graduated is because it's not relevant to mention that Nathaniel Root graduated if we're arguing the IQ of the players who actually mean something to the game. Rodney Carney, for example, could not qualify academically for the Big Ten, which is why he wound up at Memphis. Shawne Williams, and a few other Memphis players, are prep school products who couldn't make it into the University the first time around. Either way, if they chose Memphis over Harvard and Princeton, they're still horrible decision makers on the basketball court. Enough said...

I had a friend that played football for CBHS. He would probably have been gone before you though. His name was Sedric Fields.

Yeah, I don't know him. I was at Houston prior to CBHS, so maybe that's why.
