Golden State Warriors guard Baron Davis has been suspended one game without pay for swinging at and hitting Seattle SuperSonics guard Luke Ridnour in the chest, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Senior Vice President Basketball Operations.

The incident occurred with 11.7 seconds remaining in the second period of the Warriors 109-93 win over the SuperSonics on Monday at The Arena in Oakland. Davis will serve his suspension Friday when the Warriors host the Cleveland Cavaliers .

I saw when that happened but I didn't think it was that bad. It didn't seem like Baron was trying to hurt Ridnour but more like giving him a shove. It was kinda weird though.

Wow, Baron Davis gets 1 game for that, and Shaq still has not been fined or suspended for his shot to Bynum. The inconsistency of the league is disgusting.

I think Baron should tell the media that he's "shocked" with the suspension, a la Kobe.

Totally agreed, there are major double standards with alot of things around the league.

That is exactly why.. The Cavs are slumping, the league needs Bron to win a few. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Also interesting that Shaq isn't suspended, his next game is Friday against SA, nationally televised on ESPN, in the primetime slot.

D Stern is SUCH a pimp, his priority has always been the take from big market TV,product endorsements. That's why the refs never seem to get "encouraged" to sometimes call the game by the rules....if ANYONE still knows what the real rules are. Shaq regularly gets away with "accidentally" slamming his arms and elbows, shoulders and ass into players, clearly initiating contact, and often,on D,taking a headshot at a guy that ought to be a flagrent. Shaq outweighs Baron by about 140,so it's not just about bad behavior, its also dangerous. I saw the Shaq-Bynum thing and frankly could not see any reason Bynum even got a T.

I wish Baron would "appeal" the suspension, a la baseball, so it would be delayed until after I go watch the Cavs game Friday night!!! Dang!

Man, what absolute bull. Sure the Baron hit was unsportsmanlike, but what about other players that do the same thing that don't get suspended.

It's a conspiracy! They'll do what it takes to let LeBron win! ;-)

Did you see the replay? Honestly, I think Baron deserves it. If I was coach he'd be benched the second half (Course then I'd probably get fired).

I also think Antonio Davis deserves more than a 5 game suspension. Wait, don't tear my head off -- I think he did what any man would do in that situation. I'm married, and hell yeah I'll be by my wife's side at a moment's notice. Then I'll serve my suspension. Why do I think more than 5 games? AD is not only a good teammate from what I read, he's a good indivdual. And he wasn't trying to start any trouble that night, just concerned for his family. He doesn't deserve any criticism for what he did; however, he must serve as an example. You cannot go in the stands as a player. PERIOD.

There are a lot of reasons for this, but here's a big one: With thousands of passionate, often-drunk fans piled into an enclosed arena, shouting and hollering and cursing each play, things can get emotional. Ask yourself, what if that Artest situation in Detroit was on just a little bit bigger scale? What if there were, say, 4 or 5 seperate fights in the stands, with more fans, and then a player really starts to get walloped. And then his drunk fans (say Indy fanatics in Artest's case) try to rush to his rescue and start pounding Detroit fans? With 8-12 security guards in any one section of the arena at any one given time, they're more like spectators than law enforcement.

What if your eight year old daughter accidentally gets trampled in the scuffle?

That Artest situation could have been much, much worse. People can get that out-of-control. Think International Soccer Riots. It can happen.

I know this is extreme, and I know I'm no expert, and I know you may probably have many arguements as to why a riot wouldn't break out at an NBA game and why a 5-game suspension is too much for AD.

I just feel that David Stern has got to set an example.

If I were Antonio Davis, I'd do the same thing.

If I were David Stern, I'd suspend him -- big time -- for it.

It was a bump agross his chest which was a cheap shot and he got a technical (which carries a heft fine and too many technicals and you get a suspension). If this sort of thing was dealt with the same way every time, then I'd have no problem with it.

Good point -- the league does seem pretty inconsistent with the way they handle these things -- the Shaq comparison is clear. But, IMO, Baron's suspension was warranted: from my perspective:

    a)it wasn't a play on the ball
b)it was too far after the whistle to be considered part of the play
c)it was a violent swing, despite being below the chin, and it's possible that a flailing finger or something caught Ridenour's face becase he was holding his nostril after the confrontation
d)it was obviously, IMO, a schoolyard swing and had nothing to do with basketball

I'm still a huge Baron fan, but that was a mistake IMO.

So it looks like Fish is starting today. I was hoping that Pietrus would get the assignment to stop James since JRich can guard Snow pretty easily and Dunleavy can handle Jones. Oh well, once James puts about 12 on Dunleavy in the 1st quarter Pietrus should get some minutes.

I'm hoping to see some good minutes for Monta Ellis tonight -- Snow is to slow to keep up with him.

And yeah, Dunleavy will have some trouble defensively tonight, but frankly we could have Ron Artest out there and the way LeBron has been playing he'd still go for thirty.

Let's hope someone (Foyle / Biedrins) can slow down big Z in the paint.

It will be interesting to see whether Dunleavy will actually guard James or not today. Last year, it was totally out of question, and every tough match up went to Richardson and Pietrus. But, this year, Dunelavy is actually guarding players like Melo or Lewis, and against Lewis, he actually did a good job. Let's see how much Monty trust Dunleavy's defense...
