    I woulnd't say it's an unknown answer , because as I said before, players in the day like Bill Russell, Wilt, David Thompson, Earl the pearl, those players played on thier natural talents. I mean some exercises were done but it was really just a lot basketball and women. It's the mentality of the player Wilt in todays game instead of 7 feet 260 he would probably be 7'2 286 swol. Because any athlete knows that you have to rise above and beyond the level of competition, if you want to be among the basketball elite. Can you see David Thompson, Magic Johnson, or Larry Bird super swol walking in some jumpsoles drinking whey protein shakes. The thought is scary. I iguess Lebron James is the closest we'll get to it.

    Regardless what anyone has to say, Kobe's 81 point performance was remarkable. That is just beyond man-like skills right there. I don't believe anyone could top the 81 in a long LONG LONG time.

    Statistically, they're terrible as well in comparison to the 85-86 Celtics team (one of the best ever). That team had a league leading defense in the regular season, giving up only 102.5 points per 100 possessions (league average was 107.2). By comparison, the Raptors are the second worst defensive team in the league this year, giving up 113.5 points per 100 possessions (well behind last place Seattle, btw, which gives up 118.1 and might just be the worst defensive team of the modern era).

    If it's so much easier to score these days, why are there so few players shooting over 50% from the field? Why do you have teams limiting opponents to under 90 points routinely? Team field goal percentage is down drastically across the board -- surely that has to do, in part, with better team defensive schemes.

    </div>

    one reason that partly explains this is the fact that players these days spend less time at college and come out of high school
    hence they are more "raw" and less fundamentally sound and dont play as smart
    and throw up bad shots as opposed to good shots

    But NBA veterans and guys that went to college don't seem to shoot significantly better from the field. That's a factor, but I don't think that explains it completely.

    Their's a lot of things, a lot of guys don't have the balance in their game in terms of inside-out, and mid-range game. Not many teams are playing great teamball, since Jordan who is an exception to many rules did the one man team, everyone thinks it can work with their star, and not everyone can score 30+ PPG on 50%+ shooting.

    Also I don't think PPG is the measure of tough defense. Slowing down the game to a turtle crawl and playing tough defesne are not the same thing. In the early 90's, teams averaged about 2 more PPG, but they were a lot tougher defensively, some things teams did then would be flagrant fouls and 2 games suspensions now. In 97-99, the scoring was lower than it is now even, the pace was slow, and the "softer defense" rules were not yet being enforced.

    Kobe 81 was very remarkable but, the thing is can he keep it up? NO, he won the game that way and it's nice to have another way to win games. Kobe needs other players to step up.

    <div class="quote_poster">Quoting shapecity:</div><div class="quote_post">I agree with Scottie Pippen's overall thesis. The game is completely different now than it was in Jordan's era. The rules have taken away from defenders being able to slow players down like they could in Jordan's era. Scoring is easier in the current NBA.
    </div>
    Jordan created the game it is today. Made dunking popular. Before Jordan entered the league, it was short shorts. Theyre was no style. Jordan got fined everytime he wore his first pair of Nikes with red on them because they were "different".
    Jordan shaped the game, Kobes playing it!
