<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">A look at some of the potential candidates for the vacant Raptor general manager job: Rod Thorn, New Jersey Made discreet enquiries before Babcock was hired, could he be lured north? Biggest name out there. Keke Vandeweghe, Denver Has experience in rebuilding and tenure with Nuggets is tenuous after this year. R.C. Buford, San Antonio If the Spurs win another title, perhaps one of the best judges of talent and cap management could be convinced to move. Donnie Nelson, Dallas The son, not the dad; he might be ready to make a move away from Mark Cuban and the Mavericks. Geoff Petrie, Sacramento If things go sour with Kings ? after Artest trade, that's a possibility ? highly regarded GM may be looking to move. Ed Stefanski, New Jersey Thorn's right-hand man might not be a big enough name to carry title of president as well. Larry Brown, New York Things aren't going so well with Knicks; he toyed with Cavaliers' president job last spring. John Hammond, Detroit Didn't even get an interview last time and should have; well-respected lieutenant of Joe Dumars. John Gabriel, Portland He's now scouting but has track record as a general manager in Orlando, will want the job but may not be big enough. Julius Erving, unattached Why not? Maybe he could get Vince Carter back and motivated.</div> Source You have to like everyone of those as a possible replacement. It would be pretty ironic to see Rod Thorn as the next GM in Toronto.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting The_Answer:</div><div class="quote_post">Julius Erving for Raps GM</div> Why?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting The_Answer:</div><div class="quote_post">Julius Erving for Raps GM</div> I'll rather have Ron Artest run the team than Doctor J. Pretty obvious that the Star is just throwing out names into the mix. Highly doubt Larry Brown and RC Buford would want to leave their current positions. Even more unlikely for Donnie Nelson.
actually not unlikely for donnie nelson since thats the son of the don nelson and maybe his paps taught him a few moves.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Gotrunks226:</div><div class="quote_post">I'd go with R.C Buford thats if he ever leaves the Spurs..</div> that would be unbelievable the man is a true genius he is fiscally responsible (teachers pension fund will be happy) and has an excellent eye for talent and chemistry (fans will be happy in the long term) unfortunately i doubt he would come here unless he is looking for a challenge and with the coming cap space clearance he would have the ability to start something almost imediately
Thanks Shape for the find, I would like to get R.C. Buford (not likely), Geoff Petrie (Kings would be foolish to let him go), Donnie Nelson (I didn't know there was more than one Donnie Nelson, I want the current Mav's GM Nelson), and Rod Thorn. I don't want Larry Brown and all the distractions he brings. I'm not a fan of the way Keke Vandeweghe built Denver's team. I don't know much about John Hammond, Stefanaski, or John Gabriel. I don't know enough about Dr. J and regarding his ability to be a GM.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Dunkzilla20:</div><div class="quote_post">It says on www.hoopshype.com that John Gabriel wants the job.</div> That's okay...
Im going to say I want to see RC Buford or Don Nelson be the GM of the Raptors. Probably RC Buford though.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Q . Now that Toronto has fired general manager Rob Babcock, do you think it will make another pitch for John Hammond, vice president of basketball for the Pistons? A . The Raptors might pitch, but Hammond isn't going to catch. The Raptors were interested in Hammond before they hired Babcock, or at least pretended to be. They told him he was a leading candidate, then interviewed a series of candidates with far fewer credentials than Hammond. It was an insulting thing to do to a guy who had helped build the 2004 Pistons championship team. But that's not the only reason Hammond politely will decline any overtures from the Raptors. First, he's extremely happy and secure. Second, the Raptors are always going to be the "B" franchise to the Maple Leafs in Toronto. If Hammond is ever to move, and he does deserve a shot to run his own team, it will be to a place where he will have a fair chance to succeed.</div> Hammond won't head to Raptors The fact the Raptors are the "B" franchise is going to be a huge obstacle in landing a high profile GM canidate.
Why don't people get it? Peddie and Embry clearly stated that they will not hire a rookie GM, even if he was an established Assistant such as Babcock. They're going to go with an experienced guy. So Hammond is out of the picture.
Armstrong as GM? According to Sportsnetnews, they are hearing rumours of having Jack Armstrong as general manager of the toronto raptors. What do you guys think, do u think he'll be successfull? From a NCAA coach, bball analyst to a GM?
The main reason I'm against it is because I like him as commentator and resident analyst.... If he's gone then we'll be hearing from Leo a lot more, something I'm not really looking forward to. I also think he has better chemistry w/ Chuck than Leo has with Chuck when they broadcast games. btw, I thought Peddie stated that he's gonna go w/ someone who has more experience...... Babcock has more experience than Jack so I doubt there's any truth to this
