I was just watching "Rome is Burning" and I caught the end of it and his last segment was on the 2006 Dunk Contest. A question for Rome was if he will watch the Dunk Contest or not. He said no simply because "It`s the same thing every year, the NBA picks a bunch of no names, has them do the same dunks we`ve seen before, and the top no-name dunker raises the plaque." He basically explained how he thinks the Dunk Contest is boring. Would anybody agree with him on the topic? It`s a no for me. The Dunk Contest every year always provides enough excitement for me seeing some of the best young dunkers compete for it all.

I enjoy the dunk contest just not as much as back in the day. I agree that they should put some superstars in there it would just be nice seeing marquee players against the young gunz.
Steve Young should have hit Rome harder when he had the chance. Biggest suck up ever unless you won't come on his show. If you change your mind and go on his show, suddenly he was mistaken and you're a "stand-up guy" and "I respect that." He takes cheap shots at former athletes suffering from mental illness and drug addiction. Remind you of anyone? Watch Fox at night? (Hope you don't).
I'm not the biggest dunk contest fan, but last year's dunk contest was simply awesome. And Amare and Josh Smith were NOT "no names" last year (Amare was an all-star, and Josh Smith dominated the highlight reels all season). That said, there are other events that I think would be interesting. A 2-on-2 tournament would be a blast. Even something as simple as HORSE would be more fun for me to watch.
I can't stand Jim Rome but I kind of agree with him. I enjoy the dunk contest but its just not as exciting as it used to be. It seems like the dunks are repeats alot more often than usual these days, maybe they ran out of new stuff to do but VC and J-Rich were throwing down innovative dunks without all of the props and things that the players have been using recently (i.e. jumping over people, using a guy from the crowd to lob a pass, etc.). I'll still watch but I haven't really seen anything that is that amazing since J-Rich/VC/ Desmond Mason were in the dunk contest.
Back then they had more four dunkers and they need to take out that 3-year and under rule to try to bring out T-Mac, Vince, Kobe again.

It kind of takes the fun out of it if players are being forced to participate. What the league should do is pass around a card to every player and have them fill in which events they'd be willing to participate in. Also, increase the winnings. Then, they could just choose players from that.

It still is the vehicle that keeps the all star game going. The last couple of games have been so boring i didnt know what to do with myself. But like i said if we had some rivalrywith superstars like kobe and bron then it be the best thing ever
Dunk Contest Remains one of the more interesting parts of a pretty boring all-star weekend. Repeat dunks are a huge part of the problem, but mostly it's lost all the novelty it once had. Still fun to watch, and no doubt the guys are great dunkers, but I wonder if we're just too used to it. Overall, it's hard to believe that the NBA incites the same passion in its fans that it used to. It's a media conglomerate and it's pretty hard to get attached to. As for Jim Rome, he's just a little punk. Has anyone every seen the video of Jim Everett attacking Rome? He just kept calling Everett "Chrissy". It's hilarious. He's just Rush Limbaugh talking about sports. A more interesting approach to the dunk contest would be including one guy from every team and doing Round Robin's, with certain players given byes based on one thing or the other (dunks per game, Fan voting, or player voting). Then there would be team attachment, the potential for real underdogs and there would be time to get used to the players. I hate heaping more PT on some of these guys, but I bet others would appreciate it. Just an idea.
Why do marquee players matter in a dunk contest? I'd rather watch someone like Josh Smith or Andre Iguodala throw it down over Amare Stoudemire. Just because they're not huge yet doesn't mean they can't throw down some highlight reel material. I don't care who's in it, as long as they can give me a reason to jump out of my seat in awe.
the dunk contest is definitely the most excting part of the all star weekend for sure. it's always been like that.
i hate jim rome. he should just shut up. dont like the dunk contest? thats good for you! then just dont watch it!

If there were, say a 5 million dollar purse, then alot of players might want to participate. Then you can throw in 8 dunkers instead of 4, and have 3 million for first, 2 million for second, and 1 million for third.
