There's the usual G.O.A.T. threads and all-time team threads, but I don't recall ever seeing this before, and I just wanted to see everyone's responses. First: If you could choose any player in NBA history to build a team around, who would it be? Second: Now, with that player chosen, build a team around him, again, choosing from anyone in history. Starting lineup and bench. The purpose of this is NOT to make an all-time team or anything, but choose who you're going to build your team around, add a secondary star or two, and then add role players that you feel would compliment your star and fit how you want your team to play. Again, this is about constructing a TEAM, so consider how your choices will mesh together. Select your star, give what kind of complimentary players you'll surround him with, and your team philosophy.

With some greats, the discussion is about how they either had or didn't have a supporting cast. So if you surround you chosen great with a supporting cast which is specifically tailored to their strengths and weaknesses so that everyone's on an even keel, I'm curious to see what we'd have, and at the end you can give your opinion on which team looks the best.

In my time it would have to be Michael Jordan although I could have just as easily said Larry Bird. Main reason is the drive to attain perfection that both had for themselves and their teammates. It must have been tough to play with them since you knew they would be on your case if you loafed on a single play even in practice. But that's what it takes in this world. It's certainly why the Mavericks are playing better this year. You don't guard or miss a defensive set and you get chewed out by the coach; and you don't play.

It would definitely have to be a big man, IMO I've always felt Hakeem Olajuwon was the best big man of All-Time. His ability to do everything on the court would make it easier to build a team around him as well. I'd pair him with a physical PF and a lot of perimeter shooters who shoot at a high clip and a versatile SF.

C - Hakeem Olajuwon (franchise player)
    PF - Charles Oakley
    SF - Derek McKey
    SG - Joe Dumars
    PG - Sam Cassell

I would probably pick Michael Jordan. At first when I saw this thread I was tempted to say Wilt Chamberline easily, but the more I thought about the era he played in, and how many changes have been made to the game since he played. The more I felt his dominance would be held in check by all the new rules such as the three second lane violation, the way teams are allowed to play defense now a days, etc. So I will go with MJ his greatness is unparalleled in my opinion.

I agree with Shape on this one. Hakeem Olajuwon. He's probably the most versatile big man of all time, and in my opinion, the best center of all time. The main could do anything on the court from steals, blocks, rebounds, and points and really carried the Rockets to their two championships. If you pick a guard, it would be much harder to build around him since good centers are harder to come by and Hakeem pretty much solidfies the position up. Meanwhile, you could easily get a couple of decent guards around him such as Jason Terry or a Michael Finley.

So far, shape is the only one who's actually read the post. It's one thing to just throw a name out there--that's easy. It's another to actually put a team around that person, which so far, only one person has done...

I hate to give the boring, obvious answer, but I have to go with Michael Jordan.

I would start with Michael Jordan of course, you cannot go past the greatest of all time. So, my team would look something like this.

    C - Hakeem Olajuwon
    PF - Charles Oakley
    SF - Scottie Pippen
    SG - Michael Jordan
    PG - John Stockton

All these players are excellent at their respective positions. All are unselfish and willing to do the hard work. They can all play defence, pass the ball run fundamental plays and work well in a team environment. All have been coached by excellent coaches and all know what it takes to win. They may not be the flashiest team, but they would dominate. Add some role players like, Joe Dumars, Sam Perkins, Ben Wallace and you would be set. An unbeatable dynasty in the making!!!!

The point here was to select 1 superstar, not a lineup of them [IMG] [IMG]

The original post was for everyone to pick a franchise player, and then put together a REALISTIC team built around their skillset. Everyone, but me gets a mulligan for this thread. Let's see those rosters and some reasons why.

Michael jordan obviously, he was put on a bad team and within a few years turned it into a dynasty.

There are many, many players out there to choose to build a team/franchise/dynasty around, and Hakeem Olajuwon is a great pick, and I would agree with it completely. But just to make a different selection, I'll say a player by the name of Tim Duncan. Beside him in the post I'd put a shot-blocking threat. At point I'd need somebody to initiate the offense in a half court set. I'd also want another person who could score well.

    C- Mark Eaton
    PF- Tim Duncan
    SF- Gerald Wilkins (defense)
    SG- Michael Finley
    PG- Mark Jackson
