he's probably a top 15 player. in no way is the greatest. lol. and your hearing this from a kobe fan. i bet all the kobe haters will not even put him in the top 50 because he is so "selfish"

I couldn't put Kobe ahead of any of them, at this point. He's pretty close to breaking in, if he can lead his team to a great season. You're telling me you can "easily" put Kobe ahead of one of these players? 1. Michael Jordan 2. Wilt Chamberlain 3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 4. Shaquille O'neal 5. Bill Russell 6. Larry Bird 7. Magic Johnson 8. Oscar Robertson 9. Hakeem Olajuwon 10. Tim Duncan 11. Elgin Baylor 12. Jerry West 13. Moses Malone 14. Julius Erving 15. Bob Cousy 16. Bob Pettit 17. David Robinson 18. Karl Malone 19. Kevin Garnett 20. George Mikan
I honestly think Kobe will never become better then Magic and Bird. He doesn't create any points team-wise.
Durvasa.. why in the hell did you... put Duncan ahead of Jerry West. For god's sakes.. I'd take Karl Malone or Charles Barkley over Duncan at the exact height of their career as Duncan.

He's obviously the best defensive player of the group, and only Barkley could make a case as a better rebounder. He has won multiple MVPs and 3 championships (along with 3 Finals MVPs, and multiple All-NBA First Team selections). All of them are great players, of course. I just give an edge to Duncan. After the top 8, I think it's pretty close.

I don't think he has reached MJ status, and I doubt he ever will.</div> Damn I am tired of these dumb comments. Don't get me wrong, MJ was great, but when he won his Championships it was the low-point in the NBA. Magic and Bird not only had to battle each others Dynasties, but the Pistons, 76ers, Blazers, and many more. The Bulls won when the League was in a period of mediocrity. The Bulls were the most dominant team ever, but much of that was due to the state of the League. Magic and Bird were the two best in League history at making their teammates better and willing victories down the stretch and to even be compared to Kobe is an utter insult. Kobe is top 20 at best until he does something (aka Championships) without the most dominant big man in the game on his team. Magic, Bird and MJ are all top 5 of all time and don't deserve being compared to an egotistical ball hog like Kobe, not yet at least.

He does things no 7-footer should be able to do. I think he has sustained a level of excellence during his career that exceeds what Kobe has done. Others may disagree, and that's fine. I just don't think one can "easily" rank Kobe ahead of Garnett, which is the only thing I'm disputing. And you can't reduce the comparison to 3 rings > 1 MVP. It's not that simple. I do think an MVP means more than championships when deciding a great a player was, however.
I think rings are more valuable then MVP's. Players dream of winning a championship not really an MVP. A championship means teamwork, work ethic and coming up big when it matters the most.

What you say may or may not be true, depending on the player. I'm saying that when we want to rank a player in NBA history, MVPs hold a higher value than Championships. Only great players win MVPs. Plenty of terrible players have won championships.

While Kobe has the luxury of 3 rings, he also had the second most dominant big man in history right beside him. So while Kobe is a great player, do not go over board. Kobe and KG is pretty close right now. The MVP is far more impressive though than the 3 rings simply because Kobe won the Finals MVP for none of his rings. I think I'm going to go with Kobe though. He has been the best guard along with Iverson in the league since MJ left. It's close though, but I'm going with Kobe even though I dislike him.

As of yet Kobe has no MVP's or even finals MVP's, to be the greatest at any position you need at least a few of those. Kobe has a chance but he's not there yet.
If you don't consider Jerry West and Oscar Robertson as 2-guards, than Kobe might very well be the second best, historically. I don't think they really made the PG/SG distinction in the 60s.
Kobe Bryant still has 7 or 8 more productive years left in him, barring any major injuries. We don't even know if he's peaked yet as a player.

Tell me which Superstars win an NBA championship ALONE?! And if you saying winning is everything, then Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton should never be consider a "great" player. In term of talent wise, Kobe ranks right up there with MJ, Big-0, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor.

Kobe and KG are NOT CLOSE. Keep smoking. Kobe has broken all kinds of sick records. He was the youngest player to get to 10,000 points. I like KG but get real. KG is a great player. Kobe is an "unbelievable" player. Throw the numbers out for one second. How many players have you seen besides Michael Jordan make UNBELIEVABLE plays under pressure on a consistent basis year in and year out like they're on autopilot? How many times has Kobe blown your mind? I'd say about 12 or 15 times easy. How many times has KG blown my mind? Maybe twice. DWade? Three or four times. Who is the most unstoppable force on the court night in and night out for the last 5 or 6 years in this league? Kobe by a landslide. The only competition he has in this millenium and they are a ways back are Steve Nash and Dwayne Wade (probably the most underrated star ever?) Kobe is quite simply on another stratosphere from the other players, stars included. He is the Barry Bonds of the NBA without steroids.
