OK it is official the hornets are wanting to get rid of him. I think that we can give up bogans and get him because he is a defensive guy who can thrive with scott and has good attitude. Why JR smith for us? He is 6'6" has range can shoot pretty well and is working out all summer in houston showing he has great work ethic. I believe he can hit his open shots consistently and will be the answer for us at SG. T-Mac is more of the kind of person willing to take someone under their wing to learn his tricks. Unlike people like kobe who is selfish and unlikely to help the new guy out. I believe if he comes it gives T-Mac the option to give him the ball and let him become what he can become. T-Mac can help him fly. And win JVG's continuous rants it can drive him two ways. With teamates support and comfort the rants could prove valuable for him to rise to a new level. Without the support of teammates these rants can make him suffer and become anotehr one of those waisted talents. I believe we have the team that can help him thrive. What y'all think with the new developing news?

What does JR Smith do better than Bogans besides being a slightly more consistent shooter than Bogans (that's not saying much)? Smith's shot selection is often terrible, and he is a guy who needs the ball in his hands on offense to be productive. With Yao and TMac, we don't need a shooting guard who'll Smith shoots just 39% for his career and that's not what we need. Not to mention his lack of defense. People like Rock4life are knocking on Wesley because he was supposedly too "slow" to guard the perimeter. Smith just takes up space defensively.

To sum up, trading Bogans for him would not benefit us in any way.

The thing that intrigues about Smith is his lengths with his speed and quickness. He will have the ability to keep up with anyone in the league. He can become a lockdown defender that contains the 30 point scorers to 20 point scoerers. As for his shot he usually shoots those shots contested and when hes open he usually makes them. I don't see why you think he needs the ball to be effective. He can just as effective be cutting to the basket and finishing their and in our system he will get open shots that he can some what consistently make. Just because he is not used as much in a cutters role instead in a role of creating for oneself doesen't mean he can't do it. If he lives up to his word and keeps working on his weaknesses this offseason he will be great next year and has the ability to average 15-20 a game.

He shoots .393 from the field, meaning no he is not a good shooter. He shot similar numbers last year when he got more minutes, so its really an indication that his poor shooting percentage has nothing to do with his minutes this season. Where'd you get that he's working out all summer in Houston? Even if he is, where was that work ethic in New Orleans?
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">I believe he can hit his open shots consistently and will be the answer for us at SG.</div>
And what are you basing this belief on? He hasn't done yet in his career and was the shooting guard on a bad team his first year. Now, when he actually is on a decent team, he's detrimental to it.

Scott's "rants" in New Orleans really showed the true JR Smith. If he can't work on his defense or overall game with Scott, why would he be able to over here? Van Gundy is a pretty big disciplinary coach and like Scott, won't tolerate the kind of stuff Smith will probably bring to this team. The teammate thing is really a nonfactor. This season Smith had Chris Paul and PJ Brown, two great presences playing alongside of him and yet he still didn't do anything about working harder.

Why do you want him anyways? He's just another Swift- inconsistent, not hardworking, athletic player that can dunk the ball.

Right, and Swift has speed and quickness as well, look how well that went. The key word with Smith is "can". He can do all those things you said, but he doesn't really have the mindset to lock people down defensively nor does he have the mindset to work hard on his game to improve it. Ever think that perhaps he doesn't really want to cut to the basket? Perhaps he's simply content with jacking up contested jumpers because he's too lazy to drive into the lane to create contact. Sort of like a really really poor man's Vince Carter with a much worse shot.

It's time to stop bringing in players with "potential" and "can" do a lot of things but havent't done them. Swift, Lampe and now Smith? Going young is one thing, but going young with lazy, unmotivated players is a whole other thing. We should look to get proven players through draft, free agency and trade, not looking for potential steals. We all know how the Swift signing has gone, getting Smith could very well be an encore.

It was in the article in New Orleans times. What makes Smith a worthwhile risk right now is that New Orleans would be virtually happy to get him out of their because he has continuous clashes with Byron Scott. Now i know you are going to say that he is another swift and that but difference is we don't have to give up anything valuable like our MLE they would be happy to get Vet leadership like howard or wesley jus from Smith because they think that will help their young guns progress. While vice versa we need young guns who can be the third option. Right now his shooting percentage is low because he takes ridculous shots like once i saw him take a 40ft three. Though once in a while he'll have a real hot game of making them usually he doesn't. Sometimes he shoots ridciulous fadeway jumpers that have no business going in. Once you bring him into an enviroment that is winning he will understand its not all about himself and that its about the team and winning. Once you start winning you start getting motivated and want the championship. So far he has never been part of a truely winning team that can get anything. If he stops taking ridiculous shots and takes just open threes i believe his percentages will rise dramatically. We can use him as a cutter shooter and eventaully good defender. He can somewhat contriube right away and i believe he can. I know most of you think i am nuts for believing in him but i believe Van Gundy can change his attitude like he did with alston who was fighting with everyone on raptors and coach last year.

Wesley's already a free agent, so New Orleans can probably just resign him if they wanted to. Meanwhile, I doubt they'd want to take Howard's long and expensive contract just to get a cancer away (if they really wanted to, they could just stick him on the inactive list and tell him to stay at home). I mean, we really don't have anyone to give them. If we do get him, Van Gundy can potentially have continuous clashses with him as well, so I don't like the risk. The payoff isn't even that big- we can probably sign a third option that brings around fifteen points a night anyway without the risk of having a lazy benchwarmer on the team. It doesn't even matter- as long as the person plays consistently giving you about fifteen every night I really don't care if he's that young or not. And in my opinion, Smith is too young, he really needs to grow up and mature.

New Orleans was doing really well at one point and actually had the seventh or eighth seed in the playoffs at points in the season, so its not like he was in a complete mess of a team. I didn't see him buy into the team concept at all when that happened. And if we start losing (god forbid), do you really want to run the risk of him just starting jack up shots like he did this season? I don't want a player whose ability depends on if his team is winning or not- he should be playing his best (or at least close to his best) regardless. And yes, I do think you are nuts. [IMG] Van Gundy did change Alston's attitude (sort of) but that was a totally different situation. Alston wasn't a lazy slacker, he wears his emotions on his sleeves. Meanwhile, a better comparison would be Swift. Has Van Gundy really changed his work ethic?

Smith is exactly what we want though. A prototypical Shooting Guard. 6'6" in height. 44 inches in explosiveness and great speed and quickness. He is also working on that jump shot and in between game in the summer so i expect him to imrpove furthermore. He is what we need. When his shot isn't falling we still can use him as cutter when mcgrady is on the outside. Jeff VanGundy talks about defence and jams defence into a players head. Thats why JR will learn it. See the difference between what has happened with scott and what will happen with van gundy is that. Scott just plain had problems with JR jacking shots when his team really had no offensive flow whatsoever. When your team is not disciplined and has virtually no system and nothing to control you and nothing seems to be working he goes up and jacks shots. We from Van Gundy have a disciplined system that is much better constructed that basically will make Smith play without the ball turning him into a cutter open shooter and defender. He will have a great effect on us and will improve to the point where we would all find it funny this was ever even a discussion. Hes a low risk high rewards player. When NO is willing to take Barry for Smith you know they are in it for the leadership. If we get him we get a great steal whom i believe can continue the rein after mcgrady is past the prime.

We don't have Barry. Waived him back in February.

How is Smith what we need? We need shooters, and he isn't one. Sure, he'll be working on it, but Shaq works on free throws every summer and he doesn't improve on it. Do we really need another lazy underachiever who won't play a lick of defense? Sure, JVG will drill defense into his head, but guys like Mo Taylor and Tyronn Lue still didn't play defense. You see a guy like Lampe on the bench, and you know exactly why.

Smith wants out of New Orleans/OK because he isn't getting playing time. I'll tell you one thing: he sure as hell won't play here.

Why won't he the reason why guys like taylor and lue can't play great defense is because they either don't have the mind or the physical attributes to allow them to play great defence. You see neither size good lateral movement or explosiveness or strength in taylor for him to even play solid D and loses his focus way too much. As for Lue he is just too small and allows guyz go shoto over him. Smith has size explosiveness and quickness to play good D and vangundy can teach him to be a lockdown guy. Reason why everyone says we need shooters is because we don't even make our open three point shots. This guy does make his open shots but shoots crazy fadeaways from far distances and shoots them contested making his percentage low. He will get playing time if we do get him because everything we get is on JVG's approval now.

Please. Mo Taylor has all the attributes needed to be a great defender. He has pretty good quickness at the four and he is very strong. Not saying he's going to be a Ben Wallace, but Taylor could be at least above average if he had wanted to. Explosiveness is not needed on defense.

When open, we can make our shots well enough. It's just that consistency is hard to come. Smith is not consistent, and his shots are not all "crazy" like you say. Playing with Dan Dickau last year and Chris Paul this year has guaranteed him enough open shots, but he can't make that consistently as well.

Saying JVG administers any trade is just a myth. Swift, Anderson and Lampe all stayed rooted to the bench.

What i mean by crazy is he has horrible shot selection. Mo taylor was way too soft to become a good defender.

I mean i don't want you guys to get pissed off or anything but think about it JR Smith could really be worth the risk. Usually established shooting guards will cost a lot more assets or rip the whole MLE but this guy we can get cheap and could step in right away and contribute if all goes by his plans into the offseason. I believe Van Gundy's defensive schemes will teach him to play schemes and he needs a different kind of hard nosed coach to teach him and thats what Van Gundy is. Plus we could get him with the draft rights to malick badine. Sure we give up an atheletic big man who could be a contributor in the future but his main position is center and we all know who is there.

I'm not pissed or anything, I mean, why would I get pissed at something totally hypothetical? Its just an internet debate. I've already said what I wanted to say here before, so I'm not really going to get into it much further. But I guess we'll see who's right in a couple years when we see where Smith is. By the way, Badiane is a powerforward, so we really could use him a couple years later- just that he's not developing nearly well enough.
