SURGERY!??! I thought this whole time he was recovering from it. So when in the world is he expected to be back?
I knew this signing would backfire for the Cavs. Larry Hughes has missed an average of 20 games for his career, and there was nothing to suggest it would be any different in Cleveland. They really overpaid for his services instead of spending their money wisely on someone like Cuttino Mobley. Mobley would have been a better fit, he's underrated defensively and is a much better offensive player than Hughes. I felt Hughes really benefitted from Eddie Jordan's guard friendly system in Washington. However, once the playoffs roled around, Hughes was exposed by Dwyane Wade on defense. He was destroyed in the WAS-MIA series by DWade. The Cavs have to figure there's a strong chance they'll face a team like Miami in the post-season. So why go out and sign a player who didn't have an ounce of success stopping the Heat's best player? Raja Bell or Cuttino Mobley would have been a lot more effective signings for Cleveland.
It's still only early days though. A lot of time for Larry Hughes to make good on his contract, and i think he will.
According to ESPN, he's done for the rest of the regular season: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?i...-021416&srvc=sz What a bum. Put a splint on that finger and play through it!
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Jerry West:</div><div class="quote_post">It's still only early days though. He's hit the 30 year old mark, and there's usually a significant dropoff for big men after the age of 30. The Cavs spent a lot of money to not only make the playoffs this season, but make some noise. If they don't win in it all in the next couple of seasons, it's going to be even harder once LeBron signs a max deal. Their cap space will be tied up in LeBron, Hughes, and a 33 year old Ilgauskas. I think the Cavs window of opportunity is two years with this current unit. Otherwise, they'll be right back in the middle of the pack.
[quote name='shapecity'] I think the Cavs window of opportunity is two years with this current unit. QUOTE] Absolutely no doubt about that, however i don't think they signed Larry Hughes simply to make the playoffs this year. The Donyell Marshall signing was definitely for short-term gain though. Obviously Z isn't going to be around long given his size and previous health issues, but i still think they can be a contender down the line if Larry gets healthy and Varejao becomes what i expect him to.
Major bummer for the Cavs. Wonder if he can make any kind of appearence in the playoffs, if they can make it.
