I don't care if he was the most overrated player in the world. Yao's teammates know what he brings for Houston and that all that matters is that Yao continues to be a better player. Oh yeah BTW i've seen many players much more overrated than Yao, How many times have you heard of "sports analyts" talk about some young gun in the NBA who they claim is the next Jordan, Kareem, Bird, Shaq etc etc only to put up numbers that even a high schooler could beat?
I think the new rules restrain his dominance on the court. When Shaq was dominating, doubleteamming was not allowed. You really cant do anything when you get four arms around your face or got sandwiched by two beefy players. Otherwise Yao could have achieved the number which people expecteting him to get. However, he deserves a stater center in the ASG without a doubt. The only overhyped thing is he cant ever be as dominant as shaq did.

From 1961-2001, you can only start doubleteamming a player after he holds the ball. Since 2001 october, NBA introduced the "ZONE DEFFENCE RULE" MEANNING you can doubleteam a player before he actually gets the ball. It is really a lot easier to push a low post player such as Yao and Shaq out of position they already occupied. That's why Yao cant get the ball easily and lose his position quite often. According to Shaq, the new rule is designed against him because of his supersize and dominance.
more on what dingking said.. u look at the phoenix game - they had a player in front of, and behind Yao. u would never have seen that before the double-team rule change. that would have been an illegal defense. now the only illegal defense rule is the defensive 3 seconds rule where u must be within arm's reach of a defender if u are in the key for longer than 3 seconds on D. now if teams want to double Yao down low like Phoenix did, the perimeter shooters have to make shots and they didn't. Phoenix also has the quickness to close out on shooters fairly quickly - but the guys around Yao still have to hit those shots.
