    Heat guard Payton ponders legacy

He has spent two decades getting under others' skin, yet something irritating lurks beneath Gary Payton's surface, too. It is not due to anything anyone said, but what he fears many will and won't say upon his career's final, inevitable stop at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

"I hope they'll say I was one of the hardest-working basketball players on both ends of the floor," said the Heat point guard, a 16-year veteran recently named one of the top 60 players of all time by TNT television analysts.

He hopes that upon his Hall induction he is recognized for toughness, for playing in 99 percent of his teams' games. He hopes he is regarded as a calm, efficient playmaker.

He knows better. He knows how adhesive a label can be; he has been reminding foes of their most embarrassing ones since breaking in with Seattle, tonight's opponent, as the No. 2 overall pick in 1990. Anyone could learn to live with the label Payton received for his sticky defensive coverage: The Glove, which his cousin coined in 1993. It's the other label that bugs him, the one he brought upon himself by ruthlessly razzing opponents for minute after relentless minute, slinging verbal darts sharp as the Space Needle.</div>

Good read. He is basically saying he wants to be remembered as one of the leagues toughest players. He isn't a big fond of the new touch calls either lol. I really think those touch calls are a bit extreme personally myself.

^ First off lemme just say that I love the new sig!

Second, I really don't have a problems with the new rules but I do have a problem when rules are different at both ends of the court. Detroit is one of the most fouling teams in the NBA yet they don't get called for half the fouls they make. Yet, for the Heat, anytime you even look at a Piston player it's a foul.

watch a pistons game. Every call that's made to the detriment of the Pistons..no matter how obvious...look who's in the refs ear. 1-3 pistons players.
They're a great team, they work hard, they have talent....and they cap that off with being the whinest team in the league. I seriously cant watch their games anymore. its whining after whining...a little bit crying in there and a flop every minute on the minute. They've gotta be the softest "tough" team ever.

And i'm neither a Heat nor a Pistons fan....thats just how i see it.

The Pistons ake whining about calls to another levels. It's as if Rasheed Wallace thinks he's never commited a foul before its horrible they cry for everything. Wade gets thrown to the floor after going to the basket and makes then 75% of the time and doesn't complain about a no call.
