Does anyone know what the deal is with that Nuggets' pick is? There seems to be some conflicting reports about it.

    ESPN says:
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The pick the Raptors sent to New York originally belonged to Denver and is not lottery protected.</div>
    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2317958

    DraftExpress says:
    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">New York receives Denver's 2006 1st round pick (top 5 protected) from Antonio Davis/Jalen Rose trade,</div>

What's really going on with the pick and if the Nuggets pick really is protected and they don't make the playoffs, does that mean Toronto owes us their 2007 first rounder?

I'm sure there is protection on that pick. I thought it was up to 7, but 5 seems about right. If Denver somehow slides and the pick becomes 5 or lower, then they get the pick. NY will then get Denver's pick next year. Usually teams keep protecting their picks lower and lower, hoping by time their is no more protection, they'll be out of the lottery.

if somehow denver got a top 5 pick then you'd just get Denver's pick the next year. Toronto's pick would never come into the equation.

So, the Nuggets lose out on BOTH picks even though they only traded one to Toronto?

they dont loose out on two....if they somehow get a pick in the top 5 it is protected...they keep it..you get their next years pick.

Edit: i think i figured out what you're talking about. The top 5 protection was placed on the pick by Denver(not Toronto) upon their trade with NJ. That protection transferes with the pick so no matter who ends up with rights to that pick, Denver still keeps their top 5 protection on it.

Ok, How the Lotto Protection Works

Denver Nuggets First Round is Protected Top 5, So if Denver's pick some how lands the #1, 2, 3 ,4 or 5th selection overall in the draft, It will be returned back to Denver if they want the pick back for them to select whomever they want. If it doesn't land 1-5 than New York or whoever has that pick keeps it. However, If Denver decides they want that pick back than Denver would owe New York or whoever has it, the following year's first round draft choice. I hope this clears things up.

It is the same way Detroit was able to select Darko Milicic with the 2nd pick. Memphis (I believe) sent the pick to Detroit; (Detroit receives Memphis' first-round pick in 2003 (top 1 protected), or 2004 (no protection). (Thorpe trade 080797).

Memphis was projected 6th in that draft I believe and surprisingly they climbed all the way to 2nd, They would have kept the pick if they would have been 1.
