Having a string of good games doesnt just warrant you as the best centre in the league. I think there are still alot of better centres than Yao, Shaq, Ben, Camby, Gasol, Miller etc.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Locke:</div><div class="quote_post">Why should Yao dominate? Because of his size? Or because of his nationality?</div> Because of his size. Yao has a lot more hype around him then Illgouskas. Yao is pressured to go the playoffs. The pressure is all on LeBron in Clevland. They have different roles on their teams. NTC I completely agree with you. I completely forgot about Miller and Camby. Gasol is a PF. Wright is the center.

That's retarded, and you know it.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Chuck:</div><div class="quote_post">Brad Miller, Pau Gasol, Shaq... No</div> Lets take Shaq out for a second. Pau Gasol and Brad Miller? Wow lol. Brad Miller is nothing close to a great center. He may score like 14 ppg but he doesnt even average half a block a game, last time I checked I beileve it was .47BPG? He averages 7 rpg in more time than Yao Ming, sad. Now back to Pau Gasol, who isn't even a center, But Yao does average a lot more points than him and you can only say hes better is because hes a leader. Yao, #1 Center in the NBA
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Because of his size. Yao has a lot more hype around him then Illgouskas. Yao is pressured to go the playoffs. I can go make signs, make false draft reports for NBAdraft.net, and make a bunch of positive threads in forums for the retarded high schooler in New York and would it mean jack on how good the player actually is? Yao is pressured to go to the playoffs? Don't you think every franchise player is pressured as well? In his prime I'm pretty sure Zydrunas was pressured as well, but just never lived up to his "hype" either. Oh, and a guy named McGrady isn't dead yet. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> NTC I completely agree with you. I completely forgot about Miller and Camby. Gasol is a PF. Here's Yao Ming's numbers- 21.4 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.4 APG, .511 FG%, .832 FT%, 1.68 BPG, 2.34 TOs, 34.0 MPG. Here's Marcus Camby's numbers- 14.1 PPG, 12.0 RPG, 1.7 APG, .483 FG%, .732 FT%, 3.27 BPG, 1.83 TOs, 33.1 MPG. Here's Shaq's numbers- 20.1 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 1.6 APG, .588 FG%, .463 FT%, 1.69 BPG, 2.64 TOs, 30.2 MPG. I think Yao has surpassed Shaq. He's averaging more points, more rebounds, slightly less assists, the same amount of blocks (.01 isn't much of a difference), less turnovers while playing even more minutes. If you compare Miller and Yao, its not even a contest. Beats Miller in points, rebounds, field goal percentage, blocks, and turnovers. The only reason why Yao doesn't get that much assists is because Miller is employed in the high post as a passing big man by Adelman while Yao is camped down low to post up. Camby's closer, but Yao is a much more well rounded player than him. He's more refined offensively, and there's no doubt he's going to alter shots being put up around him.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">LMAO Yao the best center in the NBA? Wow NBA has gone downhill.</div> Who's better? And before you respond, look at the cold hard stats above.
For those of you saying Miller, Camby and Gasol should be considered best centers in the NBA, that's just retarded. You can't even build a team around Camby or Miller, and Gasol isn't even a center. It's amazing how low some could stoop just to prove a invalid point.
Funny how the only people who think Yao is the best centre are all Rockets fans. Yao is a very good centre, he is not the best centre in the league, he still has to have at least a good 5 years to gain that title IMO.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Jerry West:</div><div class="quote_post">Houston fans overrate Yao, just as they overrate their team and everything about them. 60 wins, rah rah rah, Stromile Swift to become a star, rah rah rah, Me-Mac is tough and a true leader, rah rah rah. Yao is an excellent bigman, but anyone with both eyes open can see that he has a way to go before he becomes the best in the league. BTW How many games have Houston won when McGrady isn't playing and Yao is the go-to guy? Is it 1 of 17?</div> Wow how I despise this post. Mephis fans have a lot to be proud of. All of their MVPs and Championship Trophies. Along with their 2nd round playoff appearances...1 maybe 2 if you include the Vancouver team? O ya, don't say T-Mac or "Me-Mac" as you like to call him lacks leadership when he is among the league leaders in 4th quarter points...while Gasol chokes with only 2 points per 4th quarter. __________________OK I have taken time to read the rest of the posts on this thread and feel less....ptfo. I have to say this. If you think Houston fans overrate their players/team then you have it all wrong. Their are simply more Rockets fans than their are Memphis Grizzlies fans (as you can see on this thread, forum, website, and ASG votes). If Memphis had Yao Ming, it would be the other way around, and you would see a lot more Memphis fans. Thus leading to more Memphis fans on this board praising their team, feeling comfortable to do so because there are many other Memphis Grizzlies fans with team spirit around...who have one goal for their team. That goal is a championship. Do you catch my drift?

By no means do I think he's that great, but with the pool of good centers out there right now which are limited, I certainly think Yao has a great case.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting NTC187:</div><div class="quote_post">Yao is a very good centre, he is not the best centre in the league, he still has to have at least a good 5 years to gain that title IMO.</div> You know, I don't think Yao is the best center in the league either. But you and that SpursFan guy are really making some dumb arguments. You need 5 years to decide how good a player is?
One thing Stats don't measure are the intangibles of basketball. Shaq may not get as much blocks as he used to, but he just forces guys out of the way with his presence. Guys are scared of Shaq. I'm not sure they feel the same way about Yao. How many guys have dared dunk on the Diesel this season? None. Yao is somebody guys like Vince Carter love to dunk on. Shaq is just so powerful he forces a double team on almost half of all his touches. He contest shots just by clogging the lane on the defensive end. His 1.69 BPG might not be impressive for Shaq, but really he is doing his job. I think another reason Yao has put up his monster numbers this year is because of his rest. He has taken a huge break from the offseason and in December/January. He has played less games than Shaq has even though Shaq was botherd by an ankle injury which was bothering him even when he came back, but now that he's healthy he's been leading along with Wade the Heat to victories. Yao may have the better stats this year, but if I'm going for a Big Man to lead my team to a Championship I'm going to go with Shaq even at 34 years old. The difference has been considerably closer though. lol I just noticed the only ones backing up Yao are Rockets fans.
Since the All-Star break, Yao has played better than Shaq and every other center in the league. But I can't call him the best in the league, until I see this for a longer period of time. Once Yao shows that he can consistently play this way (for a season), then it will be easy to give him that title.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Chutney:</div><div class="quote_post">Since the All-Star break, Yao has played better than Shaq and every other center in the league. As opposed to: - Yao needs to do it for 5 years to be considered the best center in the league - There are several other centers in the league better than Yao - Yao sucks because he hasn't led the Rockets to the Finals yet - Yao sucks because he's 7'5 which means he should be dominating like Shaq - Yao sucks because he's overhyped

Yao Ming has continued to develop into the player everyone expects him to be. He's become a force on both ends of the court, and the question now is ... can he do this consistently? I'm going to say yes he can, and will be even better next season. And as a friendly reminder, Yao is still only 25 years old. I like comparing his progress to Kevin Garnett's. <u>Year 1</u> KG :: 10.4 PPG 6.3 RPG 1.6 BPG Yao :: 13.5 PPG 8.2 RPG 1.8 BPG <u>Year 2</u> KG :: 17.0 PPG 8.1 RPG 2.1 BPG Yao :: 17.5 PPG 9.0 RPG 1.9 BPG <u>Year 3</u> KG :: 18.5 PPG 9.6 RPG 1.8 BPG Yao :: 18.3 PPG 8.4 RPG 2.0 BPG <u>Year 4</u> KG :: 20.8 PPG 10.4 RPG 1.8 BPG Yao :: 21.4 PPG 10.0 RPG 1.7 BPG

Rockets fan here. Shaq owns Yao. No one dunks on Shaq therefore he is the better center. Pau Gasol is more aggressive. He outscores Yao in the fourth quarter, when his team really needs him. Yao chokes in the clutch. He is 7-5, but is not as good as all the other 7-3+ centers in the league. and those guys are? Yao sucks, Rockets fans overhype him. Thats why we cant get a win with him. Diesel you are correct.
