McNamara "Overrated" Did anyone see that post game interview with Boeheim and McNamara after he sunk Cincy? Boeheim was pissed off and swearing in the interview and daring someone to say that McNamara is overrated. He even said Syracuse wouldnt have won 10 games with out Gerry. Do you guys think Gerry can make it in the NBA maybe as a 2nd rounder? Is he really overrated or do his stats suffer carrying the team?
In NCAA basketball he's one of the best. In NBA basketball he might not be so good. He's not overrated.
He was voted the most overrated player in the Big East. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> In NBA basketball he might not be so good.</div> If he even makes the NBA.
come on now i think he is a lock for the nba he is strong, great shooter, 6'2". he may only be a back-up PG but he should go to the pros.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">He was voted the most overrated player in the Big East</div> By students of Big East school and a COUPLE Asst. Coaches. The Big East HEAD Coaches, voted him FIRST TEAM All Big East. He is far from overrated. his shooting suffers from the shots he must take carrying such a young and underacheiving team. However, I think, ala Travis Deiner, he could stick as a 2nd rounder. You tell me what Deiner did over his career at Marquette that G-Mac hasnt done already 5 times over. Add to that Mac is taller and is also Top 5 career NCAA 3pt made. I think in the right situation, his heart, hustle and that dead eye shot could hang on at the end of an NBA bench.

Far from it. Strong? Yeah? Since when? You say 6'2" like that's a good thing. 6'2" is considered undersized in the NBA.

Gerry being 6'2" isn't a great thing.
I don't think he's overrated at all. Syracuse just won the Big East championship and McNamara lead them the whole way.

Height has ZERO to do with anything if you can play. And with the exception of Nash and probably Billups, not ONE of these guys can shoot as well as McNamara. Basketball has more to do with your IQ of the game and knowing how to play. Not saying he is close, but John Stockton was 6-1, slow, not a great shooter, not an athlete what so ever. but he could out smart and out play every other guy in the L for 15 years. Now, like I said, Gerry is no Stockton, however your assesment of basketball is way off. Add in the kids heart, work ethic, drive and his IQ, and he will be on an NBA roster next season. 6-2 having NOTHING to do with it. Was Charles Barkley coming out of Auburn as a fat, 6-5 Power Forward a "great thing"? And how did that turn out? And nowhere during this post did anyone even say being 6-2 was a "great thing" Just that his size is average and solid. He's a typical PG height.
kicksdaddy is right Exactly 6'2" is where you want to be as an nba point guard. I think a lot of teams will look at a guy like McNamara and see he could be valuable for these reasons: 1) Great shooter 2) big enough frame to be a pg, similar to deron williams size 3) ultra competitor 4) good passer and decision maker 5) defender No he doesn't play above the rim. But when you have those 5 things, who the hell cares? Steve Nash is a case in point,.

All I said was that 6'2" is not to Gerry's advantage. He is going to have to prove himself in camps, in Chicago, before he makes an NBA roster. Gerry will probably make a team. Their is an old basketball saying, "If you can J, you can play." And Gerry can definately shoot the rock.

As a small point guard, I agree with everything you just said. I'm very similar to Gerry in many ways. I can shoot and have a high basketball IQ despite not being the most athletic guy on the court. Your post hit the nail right on the head. Gerry McNamara is a talented player and he makes great things happen when he is on the court. He played with Carmelo Anthony and Hakim Warrick and many people said these two guys were the reason Syracuse was a top team. But even after Anthony and Warrick left, McNamara has continued to lead this team and deserves a lot of credit for everything that school has accomplished in the last couple of years. How will Gerry's game transition to the NBA? I think he will be very similar to Salim Stoudamire. Someone who may not be a high pick but whichever team gets him will get a steal. Salim and Gerry both have deadly shots but McNamara has a much higher basketball IQ and has experienced winning at the college level which could raise his stock. I think he will end up being a late first round pick because some team will see his great upside and give him a chance.
You could make a case of him being undrafted for last years draft, since it was so deep. But I really can't see all 30 teams passing on the chance to develop him into a proper point guard.
Gerry should make it to a team, but he strikes me as a player who's going to go through a lot of troubles before finally making a stick. One of those journeyman players like David Wesley, Damon Jones, Mike James, Eddie House (not saying he's like these players just that I feel his career will be similar) and the like. Guys who had to work really hard to make a name for themsleves, and judging by how much heart he has been displaying, he can definitely do it. It'll just take him longer than most rookies but if he doesn't give up he'll make a nice living..
