Denver Nuggets backup point guard Earl Boykins likely will miss the remainder of the regular season after breaking two bones in his left (nonshooting) hand Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers.

Boykins, averaging 12.6 points, suffered the injury when he was called for a foul against Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley with 7 minutes, 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The 5-foot-5 supersub played nearly 3 more minutes before leaving the game.

"Basically, you're shooting (to return) for the playoffs," Boykins said. "It's disappointing, but life goes on. I'll be all right."

Boykins was scheduled to return to Denver today to be examined by team doctor Steve Traina. Nuggets coach George Karl said he expects to be without Boykins for four to five weeks.

The injury leaves Andre Miller and Howard Eisley to handle the point guard duties in the final month of the regular season. Eisley signed a second 10-day contract with Denver on Monday and probably will get a guaranteed deal when his part-time contract expires.

"We have Howard, a veteran point guard who's going to come in and get the job done," Miller said.

Karl said the team also could play without a true point guard at times.

Rookie guard Julius Hodge is expected to be recalled from Denver's NBA Development League affiliate in Austin, Texas.

Boykins had played in 253 consecutive regular-season games before being sidelined by a strained left hamstring earlier this season. </div>

Ouch, that's tough. Andre is going to have to play extended minutes. Hopefully Earl returns for the playoffs, because he is a big part of their bench.
