I saw a poll on espn.com and it asked for your favorite sport the NFL had 56% of the votes, the MLB had 23%, the NBA barely beat the the NHL with only 10% while the NHL had 7%. How come the NBA is'nt as popular as the NFL or MLB?

I always thought that it was just as popular as Gridiron, however I live in Australia so I wouldnt really know.
As much as I love the NBA, most people see it as glamour and money instead of real skill. Plus we have no true stars like the 90's did with MJ or 80's did with Johnson and Bird. Sure we have Kobe and such but he's losing like crazy. What the NBA needs is more excitement and better players.
Most people attribute it to the NFL being such a short season. Each team only plays 17 regular season games, so every game is magnified. MLB is America's past time, and despite the long season, the history of the game still draws people in to watch. One other reason I think the NFL and MLB are currently more popular is the market of winning teams. The Yankees and Angels are winning, and being in two of the larger media markets they get a lot of exposure. In the NBA the popular franchises have been losing for a long time, with the Bulls, Celtics, Knicks, and now Lakers struggling to win.
The NBA knows its not as popular then NFL and MLB but it does its hardest to be as popular and work towards it but America is just America. The one thing the NBA should begin doing is making sure every major country with a star player like Germany, Australia etc should get NBA through a free to air television or even putting NBA TV onto the main pay tv in that country. Id sign up straight away!
