Ok my son is determined to actualy make it to the NBA. I think it's just because he's willing to work as hard as he can at something he loves but he's just not willing to put that kind of effort at anSo now my question how realistic is his dream. ything else like school. Even though he still gets good grades he could do better if he cared and didnt play so much basketball. I figured at this age he would have realized how hard it was and stoped working as hard. Instead he's working alot harder and he want's to go far so bad. He's about 5 10 at 14 and he's a point gaurd for his freshman in highschool. He will be on the varsity team next year at a very good basketball school. He's about a 75% free throw shooter and he's very quick and a good 3 point shooter. I thought that maby he would just play div 1 basketball in college and stop there but now i'm thinking that if he can get to that point all he'll do is play basketball and his dream will be realistic. So what do you guys think does he have a shot at the NBA.

Also does anyone know how he'll get noticed by college scouts in a couple years.

He should try for a college scholarship then just take it from there. Unless he's a prodigy the NBA shouldn't really be in his mind right now.

The only chance to have scouts come out is creating a "buzz" around him. Making the NBA is close to impossible so you need to make sure your son has a back up plan.

If your isn't dunking by now, I would rule him out of the NBA.

College first...NBA is the ultimate goal of all basketball players.

Think about the millions of players who have NBA aspirations. Now think about the few hundred spots available. That's equal to a lot of broken dreams. I'm not trying to discourage his dream or anything, but realistically he doesn't have a chance to make the league.

Hope he has a back up plan in mind.

If he plays really good in a big tournament (city finals or something), I'm sure their will be at least 1 scout that will take a look. He also needs his grades too, since you need to acidemically qualify for college.

You don't know his son's circumstances, ability, work ethic, or personality so I really don't think you can make that ultimatum.

By the way, I think your son should set his goal at having a good college career and get it going from there. If he puts up good numbers in high school, its possible to make it on the college scene.

Go to the video store and rent "Hoop Dreams" for your son to watch, if he hasn't seen it yet.

first of all, he must be the biggest basketball star in his whole city, and maybe one in his whole state. he also must be a big star in college and have the height. he must be athletic and willing to work hard. basically, you have a better chance of winning the lotto IMO

Completely false. I didnt start varsity until my Jr. year. And by the time I ended the season I was getting invites to ABCD and 5 Star. When you make Varsity means nothing. OJ Mayo has been scouted since he was in MIDDLE school. I would say, the things against your kid tough, is he is only 5-10. He's going to have to work SO much harder than the next guy just because the NBA is enamored with height. There are several exceptions, ala Chris Paul, however, don't let the kid give up on his dream. The first thing you do, when you have a dream or a goal, is ignore people like the previous 10 posters. I had several people on me my whole life to not even think about the NBA. I havent made it, however, after overcoming several obstacles (passing up on several major D1 schools to attend a mid-major to play 2 sports) , dropping out early, spending brief stints in the USBL, and over seas, I havent given up. I've played Summer League in LA, competed in workouts against Lottery picks. And when I moved from Chicago to tiny ass F'ing Green Bay (where all HS athletes are lucky to go D3) I overcame the small town thing, the white thing, the OBSTACLES, and in the end, if anything else, I'm a better man because of it.

Tell him to fight for his dream. Never give up. Overcome adversity. Run through all obstacles. Break all the rules.

Make it to the NBA? You play and play and play, and if you are 1 in 100,000 outstanding players with unique skills or size, you get a chance to play in a Division 1 college, and if you work your tail off and you are uniquely skilled or have great size, you have a 1 in 30,000 chance of going from college to the NBA.

If you're son stays undersized (in NBA terms) you've got to hope that he's got great athleticism. Thats hard to control, so I'd suggest trying to make your son a smarter basketball player. Its always hard to find a hardworking pointguard that limits turnovers and is always looking to create for his teammates.

Well, the kids not that short. He's 5-10 at fourteen years old. I'm sure he'll continue to grow and have a growth spurt (if he hasn't already, he'll continue) to have him maybe a little over 6-0? Its not that bad.

What kind of comparision is that? Each requires different skills and different kinds of work. Some say it's easier to be a movie star than an Nba player.

it's a rough guess, don't take it too serious.
bottom line if you believe in yourself 100% then numbers won't matter and what people say won't matter you'll just let it fade out in the background
