The University of the Pacific senior is in the gym two to three hours each day, hustling behind screens, hoisting up jumpers, hoping he'll be in top shape when strangers whisper his name in the halls at Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Va. Maraker will display his talents in a fateful series of events leading up to the NBA draft over the next three months. He'll subject himself to more scrutiny than he's ever known, and he'll do it happily because this is the vision that appeared inside his eyelids at night as a teenager in Varberg, Sweden. "I remember coming in as a freshman, and I told the coaches my dream was to play in the NBA," Maraker said. "From then on, they always helped me, always pushed me to get better and better." Pacific coach Bob Thomason and his staff are preparing Maraker for the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, an annual event featuring 64 college seniors from across the country. The eight-team tournament on April 5-8 will attract hundreds of scouts and could be critical to Maraker's draft prospects. "I don't think it's the tell-all, but Portsmouth is an important event," said Ryan Blake, assistant director of NBA scouting services. "A lot of the players ask what they can do to prove themselves, and I tell them, 'Play to win because that's what brought you here.' " Maraker was named Big West Conference player of the year this season after leading the Tigers to the conference title and an NCAA Tournament bid for the third consecutive year. He averaged 17.6 points and 8.9 rebounds and posted 16 double-doubles. He was a three-time all-conference selection, an academic All-American and one of Pacific's all-time greats. "He's a team player with a demonstrated ability to win," Thomason said. "Now, it's just about how hard you play, how well you play and how you compete physically. "That's an area where Christian has really improved. He's developed that peace of mind as a basketball player. Now, it's time to play against pros and better players to see how he stacks up." Some analysts question whether Maraker will have the strength to defend power forwards or the quickness to guard small forwards in the NBA. Others are intrigued by his improved aggression, post skills and perimeter shooting ability. "He's basically a 6-foot-10, 230-pound multi-purpose forward, and there are not a lot of those out there," Blake said. "Christian's IQ is very high. When you have someone who can score, make teammates better, draw attention and pass - someone who has sucked in that knowledge for four years - maybe he's a guy you don't have to work with if he gets to the next level. "But he's also a guy who has to play in Portsmouth to prove that worth." Only a few players from Portsmouth are drafted each year, and even those who shine must perform in other pre-draft camps and private workouts with NBA teams. Sixty players are selected in the NBA draft. Hundreds more are dispersed throughout the National Basketball Developmental League, United States Basketball League, Continental Basketball Association and other professional organizations around the world. "If it doesn't happen in the NBA, I know I can hopefully go back to Europe and play," Maraker said. "I know that might happen, but I try not to think about it too much. I try to stay focused on getting ready and, hopefully, making it over here." Maraker is the 104th-rated player in this year's draft class, according to ESPN.com. I hope Carl Krauser, Bobby Jones, Sean Dockery, Taj Gray, and Marcellus Sommerville all raise there stock to being late 2nd rounders, I really want to see how those guys translate into the NBA Game.

Krauser is one of my all-time favorite college PG's, he is a gritty player that plays with heart. This tournament could help a lot of players move up in the draft.
