The Celtics probably won't make the playoffs, overpaid badly in signing Mark Blount and Brian Scalabrine to free-agent contracts totaling nearly $50 million and are going nowhere fast with Danny Ainge calling the shots. So why would you hire one of their senior vice presidents, with almost no expertise in basketball, to be your GM?

That's the question everybody is asking because it's exactly what Houston owner Les Alexander did last week in hiring Daryl Morey, the Celtics' senior VP of operations and information. The plan is for long-time GM Carroll Dawson to work through next season, with Morey acting as Dawson's assistant. Then Morey will take over in 2007-08.

But this is where it gets interesting. Morey's background is busines not basketball. He led the due diligence process for the Boston investment group that bought the Celtics in December 2002. He also was part of a group that tried to buy the Rex Sox a few years ago.

Mix in the fact that Alexander quietly asked people around the league during All-Star weekend in Houston what they felt the Rockets are worth, and it looks like Jeff Van Gundy might have a new owner to answer to in the near future.

"By hiring Morey, it's a leading indicator that Les is going to be selling," said one source. "With their new building, it's a very attractive franchise."

Industry experts believe that the Rockets could fetch upwards of $400 million, matching the record sale of the Suns to Robert Sarver in June 2004.</div>

And NO this is not an April fools joke.

Having the 2nd best Arena in the league, T-Mac, and Yao with all the support from China, this team looks really attractive despite this poor season.

If the Rockets could get a passionate owner like Mark Cuban(minus the idiot quality) that would be great for the Rockets. But if this does happen I'm really gonna miss Les. First Rudy T quit coaching, then Dawson announced his retirment after next year, and now Les might be leaving us to a new owner. The only guy left from the Championship days would be Clyde Drexler as a commentator.

This means, Rockets might be moving to a different city?

Not neccessarily....just because you get a new owner doesn't mean that your team has to move....I seriously doubt that would happen with the new arena and everything.

Not necessarily. It can be another thing like Cleveland last year where the owner sold the franchise, but it stayed in the city. Personally, I don't see it that big of a deal unless they move, which more than likely, they won't.

The Rockets won't be moving to another city if another owner buys the team. The Rockets are already an established team with a great arena. It wouldn't make sence for an owner to move to another city unless the Rockets had issues about their future. That's why other teams with arena problems may be moving soon, teams like Portland and Seattle. But the Rockets don't have that problem, once the Rockets start winning again this will be a great franchise.

I say use the Green Bay Packers as a model and come up with a plan to make the Rockets a publicly owned team.[IMG]

I actually hope the Rockets move as their isnt Teams in other the states. There are like 3 for Texas and 3 for California. I think we should spread them out so everyone has a chance to see bball but thats my opinion

    Screw that, move the Lakers.

Wait California has L.A. Lakers, L.A Clippers, Sacramento Kings, and the Golden State Warriors. 4 teams. If any state has too many teams its Cali.

I wouldn't mind having 2 teams in Houston.

    The Houston Rockets &
The Houston Lakers (might need a new name).

If any team needs to move...its the clippers or the lakers. One team per city please.

Texas and California are big states so it doesn't bother me that they have 3+ teams. But 2 teams in 1 city? I think the Clippers should move to Oklahoma City or Las Vegas.

I couldn't agree more. I always thought it lame how you have 2 teams for 1 city so either way if both are in the finals its you have a 50/50 chance.

I think each state should have or at the most 2. Mavericks, Rockets, Clippers, and Kings should be moved IMO. Then again they said they might be moving the Kings to Las Vegas.

Why not the spurs get moved. Houston is the biggest city in Texas. If any team should be moved its the spurs. They have the smallest population of the 3. Lakers should stay because of the tradition and the history they have in cali.

St. Louis desperately needs a basketball team, we've been fighting for the past few years. For the "Best Sports City" according to SI a couple years back, we sure are lacking in one of the better sports.

Oh, and I don't think a new owner would be able to move the team so simply, you need league approval to do so, and I doubt David Stern would let that happen.

the franchise is moving to SHANGHAI!! lol [IMG]

seriously, the team will be worth a lot considering the amount of money they are getting from advertising from China and the number of jerseys and merchandise they sell.

i agree with you because that is unfair. A city should only have one team.

That would make road games a serious pain! [IMG]

The worst part is the Clippers share the same stadium as the Lakers.
