It is usually hard for big man to adjust to the Jeff VanGundy Scheme. The most notable is of course Marcus Camby. His first season under Van Gundy he averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds. After working with Van Gundy in offseasons he improved himself to 12 and 12 after two seasons. When Marcus Camby first played for Van Gundy he was 25 years old. Stromile Swift now is 26. He is averaging nearly 9pts and 4.5 rebounds. So in this theory i am thinking that i believe stromile swift will do what camby did after adjustments in offseason to his game. Plus Swift shows great chemistry with yao can play man to man post d well and has shown more effort this season then any other season. If he becomes a 12 and 12 guy then we have ourselves another finished piece in the puzzel. What do you all think can he do it? Do you think it will happen?

I don't think Stromile will ever be a 12-rebound guy. He doesn't block out well (at all) and he doesn't have great instincts. This season, he's a better offensive rebounder than Juwan (probably only because he isn't hanging out on the perimeter as much), but he's not as good a defensive rebounder (14.1% to 15.1% in dreb%).

I still think he'll have a more productive future than Juwan, because he's younger and there's more scope for improvement in his game. But, right now, I'm having doubts that he'll ever be a quality starting big man. His offense isn't that bad, actually. It's his defensive weaknesses that are going to set him back, particularly playing for a coach like Van Gundy.

Yah but haven't you noticed no player with potential comes into Van Gundy's system and ends up a bad defensive player even Nachbar picked something up when he was here. I believe Stro can be a great defender starting to show that in the beginning of next year.

Yeah, but the difference between Nachbar and Swift is that Nachbar actually works hard and gives it his all every time he plays. Meanwhile, Swift looks like he's half assing it on most nights while others he explodes. Plus, Swift played under some pretty good coaches with Mike Fratello and Hubie Brown but it doesn't look like he's gotten much better with defense. Swift doesn't even box out well at all and just relies on his athleticism to rebound. You really can't be consistent that way. The difference between Camby and Swift is that Swift has been in the league for six years already, counting this year, while Camby has was in his third season in his first year with Van Gundy. Camby was less experienced and having a coaching change like that, you're bound to take a hit. Plus, he played about ten less minutes, which is obviously going to decrease your numbers.

The reason Camby didn't play much was because he had Larry Johnson, Pat Ewing, and Kurt Thomas ahead of him. Swift has been given numerous opportunites to prove himself and he hasn't come close to impressing. Yao Ming adapted well to Van Gundy; Mo Taylor adapted well; Kelvin Cato played the best ball of his career under JVG; and Juwan Howard was productive under Van Gundy in his first season. There's not really any more excuses for Swift to not produce anymore.

"Potential" is a word that doesn't apply to Swift, Six years in the league and he hasn't come close to realizing it. Why would the seventh time be the charm?

    Excuses Excuses.
Side Show is an athletic dunce.

    JVG system is hard?
Why has C.Hayes put up good numbers in his limited minutes.Deke's old ass plays good D and gets rebounds in the same system.
JVG has nothing to do with lack of hustle and understanding of the game.
    BUT
Stro gets excuses from some because he can dunk. What else does he do? BLock a shot or make a difference once a week if the Rockets are lucky.

Trade him. Trade him as quick as possible for whatever possible.
Chalk it up as a miscalculation as I am doing after praising the Rockets for signing him last offseason.

If Jersey still wants Stro in the offseason, give him up.
If Side Show is still a Rocket at the beginning of next season I would be shocked.

WORD!!!........the rockets need to trade this brain dead "athelete" for anything they can get.....when we signed him last offseason I wasn't expecting him to be an allstar, but I did expect him to get 1 or 2 blocks a game, play decent defense, and get 8-10 boards.....he has done none of that.......trade him while teams still think that he has "potential"....we fell for it, maybe somebody else will do the same.

Absolutely, i would like to give Stro another year, he can be good, just let him play in the line-up, and 25 mins consistently and you won't be disappointed.

A player isn't left out on the floor depending on what they could do.
Minutes are earned by what they are actually doing at the time.

If he could play as well as J.Howard or C.Hayes it would be different, but he doesn't. Most of the time he has been on the court he is a liability on both ends of the floor. If you dont agree with that you haven't watched enough games.

There have only been a handfull, if that, of games that Stro made a difference in.

I GOT TO GIVE IT TO HIM ON THE BLOCK ON K.MARTIN LAST NIGHT. WOW.

I dont know if seeing things like that from Side Show excites or dissapoints me. All his glimpses or peeks of spectacular play just means, INCONSISTENT.

I like Swift, but I don't like the way Van Gundy used him. When he came to Houston, I thought we'd use him totally different than how Van Gundy used him. First off, I was under the assumption that he'd be running the court alot more. But how can you fast break when your coach chooses to run the same half court plays over and over. That's why I was hopin we kept John Lucas to back up Skip. He was a lightin bolt that gets up and down the court, which would have lead to more pts for Swift. Think about it, how many fast breaks did you see Swift finish? Matter fact, how many fast breaks did the Rockets team even finish? (My point exactly[IMG])

^^I agree, and thats why I think Jersey will still be interested. He did OK with Memphis in an up and down game, not much difference though. The half court game the Rockets play relies on positioning and reaction, both wich Swift aint good at. His career averages would be OK if there wasn't so many misplays and mistakes.

Jersey has nothing that would interest us except draft picks and maybe the young Antoine Wright

I'd keep Swift. I like what he brings, but him and Van Gundy must've got into it because Swift wasn't seein any minutes. He had his momments this season, but he needs a bigger role.

Swift scored 18 against SA when he had time to play.

Against a team that had already secured a playoff spot and could care less, mind you.

Stromile has a great amount of potential and talent. I haven't watched many Rockets games this season because of Yao and McGrady being injured. I've heard from other fans that Stromile has a low basketball IQ. He's should develop that IQ over the summer. He should be a OK player when he develops his game to it's full potential.

Six years and none of that potential has shown up. How many times do I have to repeat that?

Potential this blah blah blah potential that blah blah blah. Catch my drift here? All Swift has is potential, but funny how it's been six years and none of it has materialized. He'll never be as good as he was expected to be.

How many chances do you want to give a guy?

Every single year of his career we've seen people make excuses for his rubbish performance and every time he's followed it up with another rubbish year.

He was atrocious this year. He got outpointed by a veteran on his last legs and no name guys on minimum contracts.

The guy is a bust, and a huge one at that.

Its funny how people are reacting the same way about Tyrus Thomas. Same type of player and same amount of potential. Im convinced that Thomas will be another swift in this league.
