<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Orlando Sentinel - Magic guard DeShawn Stevenson told the Sentinel he wants a better contract and might have to exercise his option to play elsewhere next season.

Stevenson can become a free agent this summer by opting out of his three-year, $8.2-million deal that expires after the 2006-07 season.

He will make $3 million next season with the Magic if he stays, an amount he might be able to beat in free agency.

"I'm looking to take care of my family even more," Stevenson said. "I'm not saying I don't have the money now, but, you know, just being even more secure . . . because anything can happen next year with a three-year deal."</div>

This just means we DEFINENTLY need to use this year's draft pick on a wing player.

I wouldn't really give him much more money. He wouldn't start for most teams and I doubt anyone would give him what we offer. Maybe a 3 year 10-11 million dollar extension or something would work. I do think we really need to keep him though. He's a valuable member of our team, I just wouldn't overpay for him.

Stevenson is a vital part to our success right now. He's our "defensive stopper" and he has improved his offensive game. Once he gets healthy next year he should be a quality player. We need someone in the starting lineup who isn't looking to shoot and will just focus on defense and Stevenson fits that.

I don't see anyone giving him more than 3-4 million dollars, so I think he will stay in Orlando and I hope he does.

Who is Stevenson kidding with this empty threat? This team gave you a chance to stay in the NBA and continue your career. If you weren't happy with the 3 year deal you committed to, then why did you settle for it in the first place?

What's our depth then? Turkoglu at SG, Ariza at SF?????? I wouldn't mind that, but Stevenson is good off of the bench. I'm not saying overpay him or anything, because all it sounds like is he wants an extension. Give him like 1 more milliion for 2 more years, so like 7 million for 2 years or something. It's not like that would hurt the bank.

I think that they should give him an extension because if he stays in Orlando he will have a big year next year. If he leaves I don't think he will get much playing time anywhere else. And won't get any more money anywhere else.

stevenson is actually really good in my opinion...last season he had like 4 straight 25 plus point games...he worked on his mid range jumper all summer and it showed... the magic slowed his shooting down though because of hedo and the offense they run... ALTHOUGH he can shoot...we just needed him on the defense side more... he showed that his defense is pretty good..he can draw fouls like any time he wants... if we can show off all his skills..he could be a very important player.. also we are very short handed at the position he plays..i dont think he deserves any more money than he already makes.. but i believe he is very important on the team and i would love to see him stay

We can wait a year and get Wallace. Stevenson is not, and has never been integral to our success

He's not as important as guys like Dwight, Darko, Jameer, and Turkoglu but he's in the same boat that Tony Battie is in. You need valuable role players who know their role and don't mind it. Stevenson doesn't seem like he minds being the defensive stopper, just like Battie doesn't mind being our garbage player. I would say he is an important part to our success. He's produced quite well starting for us this year and he's durable, only him and Tony Battie has started in every game this year.

Stevenson has absolutely done well. I believe we should get someone to start over him, but at this point we should retain him and give him quite a few minutes off the bench if at all possible, especially top show the rookie the ropes at SG for a few years.

Stevenson is a great player for this team, he has good D can penetrate and is a consistant shooter. More importantly he knows his role and doesn't take ill-advised shots like alot of other players in the league. I wouldn't mind locking him up long term. I mean look how much he has already improved, that combined with the fact that he is so young makes him worth more than 3 million a year IMO.

Dude... Since you're in Michigan, I'll cut you some slack, because you probably don't get many Magic games there... DeShawn is an absolutely INCONSISTENT shooter

i do know tough that he is not really a shooter.

Draft Rodney Carney, it'll be a good thing for the Magic.

I don't care if the Magic draft a wing player in the second round and start him, at this point, it'd be better than overpaying Stevenson. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good roleplayer for this team, but if you take him out of the equation, the Magic aren't going to lose that much that they can't find in someone else - either through free agency or the draft. Believe me, I know that the Magic could find someone for the same salary that puts up similar production if they had to.

Stevenson has always been all about the money. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have jumped straight to the NBA from high school instead of going to college to develop his game a bit more like he really needed to. Instead, he made the jump despite not being ready for it (it was three years before he was a borderline starter in this league). I sincerely hope that the Magic do not overpay him.

He's good, but the money he makes now is all that the Magic should pay him. 11 ppg and total inconsistency shouldn't be rewarded with a huge contract.
