Whether he has to ship any of it back to Utah next fall remains a mystery even to Harpring himself.
And to the Jazz as well.
"Matt's our top priority, period," Kevin O'Connor said of the free-agent forward as the 2005-06 Jazz gathered one final time Thursday. But that guarantees nothing, O'Connor added: "He certainly has a decision to make, too."
The Jazz know that too well. After all, another decision by another veteran forward who was the Jazz's "top priority" is the reason Harpring came to Utah in the first place.
When O'Connor, Utah's senior vice president of basketball operations, could not convince Donyell Marshall to accept his offer four summers ago, Harpring was Plan B - a fallback option that cost the Jazz $18 million over
four years and turned out well for the player and the team.
"My wife and I have loved it here for four years. We've had a great time, and we'd love to be back," said the Jazz's co-captain, who has averaged 14.9 points - a higher average than former Jazz all-star Jeff Hornacek's 14.4 - in his 258-game Jazz career. "But it's a business. I don't know where the Jazz are. I don't know what they're thinking."</div>
