He would be nice to have an LA backing up kobe.

No thanks, an immature punk isn't what the Lakers need. He needs a taste of reality by spending a year in the DLeague.

Honestly, the Hornets can do a lot better in terms of character and talent at the shooting guard position. A while ago they did a special on Smith on television that made him out to be this down to earth kid who was humble, well apparently from the actions he has displayed thus far this season that could not be further from the truth. The Hornets could work out a very nice draft day deal involving Smith to possibly move up in the draft maybe a trade with the Celtic to move to within the top ten and draft a guy like Randy Foye.

then trade him to the lakers and then send him to the d-league. you cant honestly tell me you dont want a talented young kid like smith on our team. the guy has tons of talent, all he has to do is get his head straight. i think if he comes to LA, he can learn from kobe and become a better player and a better person. not to mention we have such a great coach in phil jackson. i think they will set this kid straight. then, when kobe retires, he can just hand the torch to JR, and it will be a JR Smith and Andrew Bynum 1-2 punch

He's a dime a dozen. There's plenty of talented shooting guards in the league, overseas, and in college. JR Smith's talent is wasted on his attitude and disrespect for authority. Actually I wouldn't even call him a talented player, he's just a gifted athlete.

He doesn't understand the fundamentals of the game and apparently he's not willing to work on them. From what I've read about him, I think in his mind he feels he's an All Star already in the league and it's right to be in the NBA.

    - Poor dribbling skills
    - Terrible decision maker
    - Bad mechanics on his jumpshot
    - Allergic to defense

The reason this all came about was JR Smith's poor work ethic. Last to show up at practice and first to leave. Neither Kobe or PJax has time to baby sit this kid and get his mind right.

I wouldn't even waste a second round pick on him because this year's draft class is loaded with wing players.

He has Darius Miles written all over him.

wow! are you serious? you wouldnt even trade a 2nd round pick for him? remember, this guy was named rookie of the month multiple times last year. he is only 19 or 20 so he is still young and immature. i think what he needs is a leader, or a veteran to show him the way. that is perfect for someone like kobe to take him under his wing. jr smith is a great offensive player. he is a good scorer and a great dunker. i think with help, the guy can turn into a great defensive player. he can work with kobe in the off season to get better. seriously, you must be crazy if you wouldnt even give up a 2nd rounder for this kid. he is young, and has tons of potential to be an all star later on in his career

Even if you are right that all he needs is an older player to take him under his wing what makes you think Kobe will be that guy? Kobe is not the type of guy to reach out to his teammates he is kind of a lead by example guy more than one who hangs out with his teammates. At least that is how he is portrayed in the media, and described by former teammates. So I don’t think he would become a brother figure, or mentor to Smith if the Lakers acquired him.

kobe can work with him well because who doesnt want to be the next kobe so if jr smith does get traded to the lakers and works under kobe than when kobe retires than pass the torch but kobe is only 27(i think) so hes still pretty far from retiring

well, yeah. that is the way he is seen by the media. but the guy really is a nice person, and although i dont think he will actually baby sit jr, he could help him to develope. the guy works out with KG in the off season, i believe, and he could take JR with him. it would do JR a lot of good to work out with kobe and do what he does because it would make him a better player. it will put him in better condition, make him stronger, and in all, make him a better player. i also know that kobe wont take crap from anyone, so JR probably wont slack off. all i know is that the kid has tons of potential, and i think he can be something special in the league. all he has to do is get his head into the game and work harder, which i think can be done

You keep overlooking the fact JR Smith doesn't have the work ethic and drive to live up to his potential. Kobe Bryant isn't going to reach out to him, JR Smith has to earn Kobe's respect by out working Kobe.

The Hornets have veteran leadership on this team. PJ Brown is one of the more respected players in the game. Byron Scott has coached in the NBA Finals and has Championship rings. Kareem Abdul Jabbar recently had a talk to JR Smith, KAJ is one of the greatest basketball players of All-Time. Less than a week after this talk, JR Smith talks to the media about his inevitable departure.

If the Lakers really want an athletic talent, then I'd rather use the 2nd Round pick on James White than waste it on JR Smith. He's just as athletic as JR Smith, but the major difference is White is a gym rat and is constantly improving his game.

JR Smith won rookie of the honor awards on a bad team. Those awards don't impress me at all.

You don't just turn into a great defensive player, defense is about desire and effort. Two things JR Smith apparently lacks.

Why do you think the Lakers kept Devin Green around all season? This kid has amazing talent, and he works extremely hard in practices. Devin Green is willing to make plays to help his team win basketball games because understands his limitations on the court. JR Smith already thinks he's an All Star in the league and a premiere player. That's why you see him take low percentage shots and play matador defense.

Maybe JR Smith draws oooo's and ahhh's from his dunks and puts up some gawdy offensive numbers. These might get him into the All Star game and highlight reels, but personal accolades mean nothing unless you are also winning games.

You guys cannot be serious? And I'm SOOOO sure Kobe wasn't immature his rookie and sophmore season right? JR Smith would be a good player to be a back up to Kobe. You guys are crazy if you don't want him for a second round pick. Kobe isn't the caring/team guy? Apparently you know squat about Kobe because he tries to get his teamates into it especially evident after this game 1 at Phoenix. Kobe and PJax would whip this kid into shape and give him the reality check he needs. JR Smith is immature because he is in his sophmore season and he is 20-21 years old people. Please gawd you can't be serious....

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">You don't just turn into a great defensive player, defense is about desire and effort. Two things JR Smith apparently lacks.</div>

He needs guidance not just "You need to work harder" from someone out of the blue. If KAJ just came out of nowhere and had a talk with me everyday and worked on me I would change but not just 1 talk. Kobe could get him into the work hard mentality. I mean JR will obviously see the numbers Kobe puts up and follows in example. I can't believe you people wouldn't want him in L.A.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">but personal accolades mean nothing unless you are also winning games.</div>

Garbage fact and you know it. So Chris Paul won't amount to anything? Neither will Bosh or Josh Smith too right? Its his second season in the league he is only 20-21 years old, and I know for damn sure Kobe will slap that reality check to JR because Kobe expects nothing less than 110%. Even if they didn't like eachother in the end JR will probably have grown from that and become a better ball player and take things more seriously.

18.0 Mpg people, and he is slightly improving even with his shitty atitude, wip him into reality and I bet those numbers will soar high.

    I agree with Shape.

I wouldn't want JR either, not with his work ethic. You all say he needs to be groomed, etc etc. The thing is he shouldn't have to be. He should know he needs to work hard and that practice improves his game (obviously). But he doesn't want to practice? Where do you even start with a player that doesn't want to practice? This is the NBA, where professionals play. Act professional.

He's like Jason Richardson without the work ethic. Jason Richardson came into the league known for his athletic ability only, he wasn't even a good jump shooter. But look at him now, 23 pts a game, 44% FG, 39% 3pt, 6 reb. He has an awesome work ethic and works on his game every offseason. Nobody had to convince him to work harder or anything.

Can JR be great? Sure. What I'm trying to say is nobody should have to whip him into shape and waste their time. They should spend time improving his game. But if the first step is making him want to practice... I think thats just stupid.

Sure he's young and was straight out of highschool, but so were many others and they act professional.

Damn Shape you really hate him haha.

But honestly I don't think he's bad as he's made out to be. He just needs the right coach in a better environment.

Who said anything about Kobe not caring? I said Kobe isn't going to waste his time on someone who doesn't want to practice and work hard.

Kobe and PJax can't whip anyone into shape. It's up the player to want to improve before he starts listening.

There's nothing to suggest JR Smith is willing to listen, learn, and bust his butt to live up to his potential.

I'd rather invest my time into someone with a little less talent, but the drive and dedication to be an outstanding pro player.

Paul, Bosh, and Josh Smith all work hard, JR Smith doesn't. He doesn't like to practice.
Kobe Bryant has always had an insane work ethic, even in his rookie and sophmore seasons. They made it clear to him if he wanted minutes he'd have to earn it by playing defense.

you made a lot of good points. but put it this way. JR smith comes to the lakers, goes to practice, has to guard kobe, and gets burned every play. dont you think that will make him a lot more humble and get the desire to improve his play / defense? PJ is a great leader, same with byron, but i dont think they have that player to make JR realize he isnt a superstar and needs to get humble. last i checked, JR had to guard kirk snyder in practice, who isnt a big name or a "superstar". with kobe, im sure he'll get into JR's head and im sure JR will want to improve more in order to not get embarrassed every single play on defense.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">If the Lakers really want an athletic talent, then I'd rather use the 2nd Round pick on James White than waste it on JR Smith. well, that just doesnt make sense IMO. we have the #49th pick in the draft. the draft is really weak this year, and not to mention most 2nd rounders wont amount to a thing. james white is a great dunker. i havent seen him play a lot, but according to your mock draft, all he has is his athletic ability, and he isnt a great shooter. dont you think thats the next darius miles? i know he has a great work ethic, but so does millions of other college players who are athletic freaks, but cant make it big because they dont have the talent. i like james white, and i think he does have a chance to be a good nba player, but i doubt he will ever be as good as JR in his rookie season.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">JR Smith won rookie of the honor awards on a bad team. Those awards don't impress me at all. </div>

just because he is on a bad team, it doesnt mean anything. just because okafor was on the bobcats, which are a very bad team too, does that mean he doesnt deserve the ROY? JR is a very talented player, and like i said, he has a chance to be an all star. all he has to do is get his head into place.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">You don't just turn into a great defensive player, defense is about desire and effort. Two things JR Smith apparently lacks.</div>

like i said, put him in practice and he will have to guard kobe. kobe will burn him play after play. kobe will most likely yell at him and tell him to D up and ect. and JR smith will get embarrassed. that should give him the desire to work harder on defense.

if that still doesnt work, oh well. all you gave up is a 2nd round pick who probably wont amount to much anyways. JR is young, and he has a cheap contract. you can just wait for it to run out, or, you can be smart and trade him away. im sure there will be a team in the NBA that will be more than happy to give us their 2nd round pick in exchange for JR, simply because of his potential.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Why do you think the Lakers kept Devin Green around all season? JR Smith just needs someone to make him humble. and like i said, you can let him guard kobe in practice, or training camp. and kobe will burn him. then you can have kobe guard JR, and kobe will shut him out. that will embarrass JR and make him more humble, and it will make him stop thinking that he is an all star player.

as for devin green? he is on our roster this year, but do you really think he will be back?

Losing your starting job and getting blasted by your head coach in public isn't humbling enough?

Last year on a bad team JR Smith put up nice numbers, this year on a team fighting to make the playoffs, he became a disruptive player.

The Hornets played their best basketball when Byron Scott decided to bench him in favor of Kirk Snyder.

Players like JR Smith might be the better player, but sometimes it's about having the right players out there. Kirk Snyder can score without the basketball in his hands, and he's a better defender.

JR Smith needs the ball a lot to be effective and he would be a terrible fit the Triangle offense.

I definitely think Devin Green will be back next year with the Lakers. Tex Winters loves him and is confident Green can become the facilitator in the offense.

If it doesn't work out, it's not oh well it only cost us a 2nd Round pick. It costs you a lot more, because the time you spend trying teach a player who doesn't want to learn, is time you aren't spending developing someone who is eager to learn.

well, the lakers have a lot of people who have been there and done that. im sure brian shaw would be tremendous help for a guy like JR. you said that we could be better off without him so we can develope more players who are eager to learn. sure, that sounds good, but once again, JR has the potential to be an all star. you cant honestly tell me you wouldnt sacrafice a couple of hours away from developing our "young" guards in sasha and smush for JR, when you can have a potential all star, can you? like i said, its a low risk high reward thing. if we trade for JR, and the coaching staff finds out in a couple of days that he isnt listening to them and being lazy, we could just lay off "developing" him a bit and put him on the trade block. like i said before, im sure there are teams out there that would be more than happy to trade their 2nd round pick for JR. heck, the spurs almost traded bent barry for JR at the deadline if im not mistaken

What are the chances of getting anything in return if you immediately put Smith on the trading block after you acquire him? The team that trades for him will basically be his last chance.

I'm with shape on this one. The only way Smith would ever become an All-Star is if he was voted in by the fans. He's ridiculously overhyped because of a good rookie season on a crappy team and the slam-dunk competition. His limitless potential is essentially negated by his bad attitude and work ethic. I'd rather pick a hard-worker in the 2nd round and see him develop into a roleplayer.

^ well, i guess i can understand that. but i would much rather trade a second for JR smith. but in reality, i doubt our 2nd can even get him anyways.
