Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson will be named the NBA's Coach of the Year, according to media reports in the Dallas area Monday night.

The Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and ESPN 103.3 FM all reported that Johnson would be honored Tuesday.

Johnson, who is in his first full season as the Mavericks' coach, led Dallas to a 60-22 record this season and in March set the record for best coaching start in NBA history after 82 games (66-16).

"I just didn't know he was going to be this good, this fast," Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, said at the time.

Johnson was coach of the month in April and November, making him the first person to win the award his first two months on the job. In February, he coached the Western Conference in the All-Star Game.

Well deserved Avery. Could see it coming all along this season. If Dirk has a couple more monster games as he did game 1, he could be winning the MVP as well.

Hats off for Avery Johnson. He did win Head Coach of the year. And deservedly so. I mean in the 2nd full year of his coaching career he has now qualified for something very special. All-Time Winning Percentage. He has the 2nd best winning percentage by an NBA Head Coach in Leagues history. Behind only the Zen Master. He's modified the Mavericks offense to keep it as good as it was before when it was a deeper team. And in the wake of Don Nelson era, who couldn't get the Mavericks defense fireing on any sellenders, Mr. Johnson has these Dallas Mavericks playing good defense. Despite Shawn Bradley being gone. So many years the wrong Coach gets coach of the year. Please, the first year the Lakers won a tittle with a 67 winning games season; Doc Rivers receives Coach of the year. Shaq was right Phil Jackson deserved it. But Avery, a Champion as a player, a man that gave John Stockton a run for his money every time the 2 played. Avery will be a unique rareity. Great player and now great Coach. Just as Larry Bird, and Jerry Sloan are/were. So congradulations Dallas and Mavericks fans. Your coach definately deserved Coach Of The Year. And He got it![IMG]

Avery defenitly deserved this award. When Nellie, Don Nelson, was here the mavericks were a strictly offensive minded basketball squad.

However when Avery came in, he finally returned the D in Dallas!!

Congrats Avery and good luck in the finals [IMG]
