<div class="quote_poster">Quoting igotask8board:</div><div class="quote_post">I don't understand how this salary cap thing works. All we have is one MLE, yet we have so may players going into FA.

Hayes, Bogans, Wesley are all FAs. (we might keep Bogans, Hayes)

We got rid of Barry, Clarence, Moochie and Bakers contracts. Sura and Deke might retire this off season, leaving us with:

    Rafer, Head
    (Bogans)
    T-Mac
    JH, SS, Hayes
    Yao

We are going to waive Bowen. How does that leave us with 8 players and only a MLE.

If we did waive Juwan and Swift, could we sign other players worth the same amount?

Some one care to explain this to me? Thanks in advance.</div>
The thing about salary caps is that the cap is around $45 million. With Yao and TMac's contracts, it's already around $35 million. You have to be under the cap to sign players who command more than the MLE. Normally, teams with at least one max contract guy aren't under the cap. We have two. As well, even if you waive a player, his salary still remains on your payroll until it runs out. A way to get rid of it is if he retires or you buy out the contract.

Therefore, even if the scenario you proposed stands, Swift, Howard, Yao and TMac will still make sure that we're over the cap.

Oh, and one thing: teams can sign minimum salary players even if they're over the cap and have used up their exceptions. Bowen is making the minimum, so waiving him won't make sense since we'll sign a minimum guy in his place anyways.

Rockets need a some athletic wing players.
Its not like the Rockets are starting with nothing. Howard's big contract ain't going any place until the last year. Rockets need a starting 2 and a backup SF and don't have a lot of money to do it.
REALISTIC possibilities, especially if Spanoulis comes over and eats into the MLE.

    Qyntel Woods
    Deshawn Stevenson
    Rasual Butler
    Fred Jones

    Dermarr Johnson
    Jim Jackson
    Devean George

The draft has to provide 1
a starting SG or backup SF.

    Just a few thoughts

^^all those guys prices are high or going up, and can go even higher if they perform well in the playoffs.

Sign and trade maybe. But that means the 1st pick would be traded. What else would attract a big name.

Who can we trade other then t-mac, yao and alston that other teams would like to have??? no one wants anyone from the rockets!!!

Mutombo, Wesely, Howard, Bob sura are way to old now...

Burnson, Hayes, Lampe, Ryan Bowen no one would make a trade for them and we wont get anything in return...

Swift has a long contract and he has been a big disappointment so we wont get much for him either

I like keith Bogans and luther head but we wont get anything in return from them too

Just waive the worthless ones (if we can't trade for anything better) and go over the cap like the Mavs or SAC.

This is why I want Les Alexander to sell the Rockets. Hopefully a Mark Cuban-like owner can come along.

we still have to pay all the players that we waive... teams waive player to have place for other players to play + the rockets have the 8 highest pay roll in the NBA, Yao contract is gonna go from 5 millions to 12 next season!!!

We have Wesley's contract coming off the books, which will likely eliminate the impact that Yao's rise in contract will have. Other than that, I definitely agree. This team was assembled to win immediately due to its age, and now that we have failed to win, it has to be disassembled immediately. Rebuilding should be the next stage, an overhaul to revolve around Yao and TMac should be what we do this summer.

<div class="quote_poster">Locke Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Battier signed a six-year extension last summer, so strike him off your lists. As for me:

    1) Matt Harpring - not an exceptional player at any position, but plays hard-nosed defense, hustles, and fits well on any team.

    2) Drew Gooden - PF with range, averaged 9 rebounds per both of the past two years, good low post game, good offensive rebounder. Defense is suspect, but would be an upgrade over Howard and Swift.

    3) Fred Jones - athletic, good shooter, quick, explosive. Just the remedy we need at shooting guard. Size could be a problem, though.

    4) Al Harrington - good defender at the four spot, versatile enough to play both forward spots. Has range up to 20 feet, great on the break. Guy who will give you 100% every game.

    5) Ruben Patterson - explosive on the break, top perimeter defender. No range and very combustile, however.</div>

    Sorry for the huge bump.

I was looking for an old post and this thread came up. I forgot how many people wanted Battier/Bonzi/Gay. I think its pretty cool that we acquired (even if it was for 10 sec, no one saw Gay falling to #8) all 3 of these players this off-season.

I also noticed this post by Locke and though it was pretty funny. Every time I want the Rockets to aqcuire a player (Alston/Battier) and Locke says it most likey wont happen, that we acquire the player?

    My new wishlist (hint):

Dwayne Wade - I think he would be a good fit next season.
    Andres Nocioni - Geat D
Kevin Garnett -[IMG] Tracy, KG, and Yao. Nuff said.

    Haha, you got me there.

The fact is though I totally couldn't see West trading Battier away. Mike Fratello likes him, the players like him, hell, he's the city's favorite athlete, not to mention he had just signed a big extension.

Then again, he did get traded, so what do I know...

I didn't mean anything by it, or try to 'get you'. It's just luck. Even though I wanted those players, I could never picture them in a Rockets uniform.

Its funny the way that works. It really does prove that anything can happen in the NBA. Thats why I like it so much, its unpredictable (unless its Rock4Life). The trades, the teams that make the playoffs, the signings, the champs (det), or even just the scores. You can go from down 12 to up 1 in 35 seconds. Its great.
