Lets beat the skins for Mara!</div> Mara was certainly a big part of making the NFL what it is today. But what is up with this quote? <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>"Wellington Mara is the face of not only the New York Giants but the NFL," Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey. "He's a pioneer and the guy that everybody looks up to."</div> Shockey doesn't strike me as the sympathic guy - nor does he seem the kind to care about history. Is this a PR move to get him a quote like this to help his fan appeal?
I doubt it, god the guy was just asked about it on the spot I'm sure and responded like this. That isn't about being a sympathetic, it is knowing what to say at the right time, he was hardly gonna say anything bad about him or that he didn't care, it is called having common sense.

I'm sure his publicist had something to do with coaching/prepping him for questions like this. (I guess very few people, myself included, give Shockey much credit for tact...)
give Shockey a break he said what he said, i have no reason not to believe that Shockey knew and respected Mara considering Mara was at every game and was always in the lockerroom before he got sick. He was a great guy and one of the most respected men in football and especially in the Giants organization. Giants should not only beat the Skins but win out for him
I don't think the Giants will beat the Skins, it is more complicated than living on pure adrenaline and emotion. You gotta be prepared for a game against a very stingy defense and underrated offense!

But to be honest, if you wanted to get a good quote to honor Mara, who would you go to? I think Shockey is probably 30th on my list of Giants players.

He has really grown up a bit and its showing on and off the field

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Giantsfan1)</div><div class='quotemain'>http://www.courant.com/sports/football/hc-...dlines-football Shockey actually was close to Mara</div> Good story. Probably goes hand-in-hand with your earlier quote: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Giantsfan1)</div><div class='quotemain'>haha lol, at first sight I would agree with you. BUT sockey hasnt said really anything idiotic since his rookie year. He has really grown up a bit and its showing on and off the field</div> Seems like a possible correlation to me. With Mara dying, it makes me think about the cost of going to games and all the marketing going on. Mara always thought that the game of football could/would/should support itself. Having concerts at halftime and major singers wasn' t really needed, and he thought marketing people forced that into the picture. A good question for everyone here is to consider whether having so-and-so sing the National Anthem or in the halftime show brings considerably more people into the seats or convinces you to pay more for those seats. I will have to say, the guy probably made his share of money in his life. However, there are a lot of instances where he took one for the good of the league. I hope some of the newer generation of owners steps up and thinks the same way eventually.
