My friends and I were argueing over Gilbert Arenas being the best 2nd round pick ever. I disagreed but dont know much about the history of 2nd round picks...neither do my fat friends. Can anyone help us out and enlighten our knowledge?

Take a look at this, then just click all the years and check out the second rounders. http://www.nbadraft.net/history.asp

At this point, since after last season Arenas exploded, he's probably the best one taken out of the second round so far. Honorable mentions are Nick Van Exel, Michael Redd, Cuttino Mobley, Stephen Jackson, Manu Ginobili, Mehmet Okur, and Carlos Boozer.

I don't know much about past great 2nd round picks but some recent ones are guilbert Arenas at the 31st overall pick in his draft, Rashard Lewis as the 31st overall pick in his draft, and Manu who was the second last pick at 57 in his draft. Manu is probably the best for the value but Gilbert or Rashard are arguably better players if you discount where in the second round they were drafted. I'm sure there were great second round picks and undrafted players from back in the day but I'm not old enough to know that info.

Going back to 1985, if I had to rank the best players I think that came out of the second round, talent wise it would be:
    1. Gilbert Arenas (2001)
      [*]Rashard Lewis (1998)
      [*]Manu Ginobili (1999)
      [*]Michael Redd (2000)
      [*]Nick Van Exel (1993)
      [*]Cuttino Mobley (1998)
      [*]Dennis Rodman (1986)
      [*]Bobby Simmons (2001)
      [*]Stephen Jackson (1997)
      [*]Tony Kukoc (1990)
      [*]PJ Brown (1992)
      [*]Carlos Boozer (2002)
      [*]Jeff Hornacek (1986)
      [*]Clifford Robinson (1989)
      [*]Mehmet Okur (2001)

Just wondering, why'd you pick 1985? All the Pre 1989 drafts had more than two rounds in the draft, so the results would obviously be a bit skewed. A bit confused on putting PJ Brown over Mehmet Okur too, since this season obviously Okur exploded onto the scene. Their rebounding numbers are similar too while Okur seems to have a lot more offensive moves.

Historically, you'd also have to include Nate Archibald, Alex English, and Calvin Murphy.

I guess you could include Nate Archibald for second round greatest...but he was the 19th pick...which now a days is a first round choice because there are more teams. Same with Alex English but I guess you could count them. Can't you consider Denis Rodman to be the best second round pick ever? I think both Archibald and English might be better than Arenas...but I'm not sure.

Looking at that list makes me sad; we've had more success with 2nd round picks than first rounders lately! (Dan Gadzuric was a 2nd rounder, also, but he doesn't belong on that list). The only 1st rounder that comes to mind in recent years is that kid from Tennessee who pretty much flopped while guys like Redd, Danny G, Simmons (well, he was a 2nd rounder for someone lol) have become the glue of our franchise [IMG]
