Yeah I'm pretty sure. The source who leaked the story said the request was put in for him to change his jersey to #24.

Kobe talks about it in this article I posted yesterday -- Lakers Aim for 2007-08

I can't believe it are you guys serious... yea Kobe can be a great defender but this year he was not a first team all defensive defender. He had his moments and can turn it on but defense was not his leading achievement this year. His leadership was his crowning achievement. Recognize what this award really is a consolation prize from the guilty voters for their biased and jealous hatred of Kobe. Look at what he did for the Lakers and the league this year. Are we going to remember this year as the year that Kobe reasserted himself on the defensive end? NO! We are going to remember this year as the year that Kobe showed the world why he is the best player in the league in terms of leadership and scoring. Unfortunately the only award that will be seen in the record books by fans 50 years from now will be a scoring championship and 1st team all defensive. Or in other words this season will be forgotten and instead Steve Nash has been elevated to top 10 point guards of all time status simply b/c he has won two MVPs but all the while never even winning a championship or even playing on anything resembling a championship contending team.

While your right, we won't remember this year as him reassurting himself on the defensive end- this just goes to show how good he really is. He is not only the scoring champ, but also makes all-defensive team???

The rest of the players on that list are not known as huge offensive threats- they are not the "superstars" such as LeBron James, Tmac, Carter, Peirce, Waade. Most of those players are role players- Kobe Bryant however is his teams best offensive AND defensive player. MVP uuh!

I have to agree with you, it is the consolation prize for Kobe. This was not his best defensive season for his career, and he slacked off quite a bit against the average players he defended.

Still you can also justify him being considered for #1. He guards the oppositions best player every night and still shoulders the responsibility of carrying the offensive load for the Lakers.

We've seen him lock down some of the better scorers this season, and in the 4th quarter PJax usually puts him on the "hot" player to disrupt their rhythm. All this without an inside presence.

Kobe wasn't all defensive team this year. They figured they had to give him some type of award so they decided to put him on the all team 1st defensive team.

its kind of like the all nba team first team and the all nba second team. you want to make the first team, of course, but being on the second team is a great honor too. its basically something they award players for after a terrific season. although i agree kobe hasnt had his best season defensively, doesnt he rank really high in steals per game? anyways, im happy that kobe made the first team, but if i wasnt being baisis, i would say that he should be on the second team or completely left off.
