I thought this deserved it's own thread. Moderator-- please delete if you disagree. Here are the yearly figures for Adonal's Contract: 05-06: $7,312,500 06-07: $8,125,000 07-08: $8,937,500 08-09: $9,750,000 09-10: $10,562,500 So, this past year Adonal Foyle made 7.3 million. To put that in perspective, Ben Wallace made 7.5 million. Yao made 5.6 million. Brad Miller made 8.8 million. Big-Z in Cleveland made 8.7 million. Zaza Pachulia made 4 million. Kurt Thomas made 7 million. All of these centers are much more productive - both numbers wise but also IMO play wise. This isn;t that big a deal. What's friggin alarming is that, in 08-09, Adonal Foyle will be making 9.75 million! I didn't realize that until now for some reason. Dude, 9.75 million!! I heard all this talk about "oh, Foyle got a modest contract for a serviceable center -- the going rate." Who here wants to argue that 9.75 million will be the going rate for Foyle in 08-09? Oh, that 09-10 figure, that's a team option. So don't panic. Yeah, a team option for 10.5 million. Heh heh. Although, with Mullin, anything is possible. Maybe he'll offer it to Foyle as a "good conduct" gesture of gratitude.
We're not the only team with bad contracts, but we're in top 9* in regards to teams with high salaries that didn't make the playoffs. We are over the salary cap, so we won't be able to land a big name free agent. We can only offer the MLE to free agents. But remember, we have to keep the MLE when Monta and Taft's contracts come up for renewal or else we could lose them like we lost Gilbert Arenas. From hoopshype.com 1. New York Knicks $123,637,545 2. Dallas Mavericks $96,688,147 3. Philadelphia 76ers $83,192,754 4. Indiana Pacers $80,144,205 5. Orlando Magic $77,094,368 6. Los Angeles Lakers $72,961,790 7. Memphis Grizzlies $67,031,292 8. Houston Rockets $65,173,158 9. San Antonio Spurs $63,918,820 10. New Jersey Nets $63,524,415 11. Miami Heat $62,500,236 12. Portland Trail Blazers $60,166,880 13. Milwaukee Bucks $60,016,425 14. Detroit Pistons $59,264,979 15. Sacramento Kings $58,751,977 16. Boston Celtics $58,408,034 17. Minnesota Timberwolves $57,279,452 18. Cleveland Cavaliers $57,069,794 19. Utah Jazz $57,008,680 20. Golden State Warriors $56,864,537 21. Toronto Raptors $56,441,381 22. Phoenix Suns $54,772,368 23. Washington Wizards $54,401,867 24. Denver Nuggets $54,369,603 25. Seattle SuperSonics $50,546,826 26. Los Angeles Clippers $50,504,238 27. New Orleans Hornets $48,504,161 28. Chicago Bulls $47,845,093 29. Atlanta Hawks $43,010,519 30. Charlotte Bobcats $33,308,932 They haven't updated Dunleavy's new salary structure, but Baron, Foyle, Fisher and Dunleavy drag our price/production ratio down. I may get arguments on Fisher. *Once you factor in Dun's new contract, we should go higher in total salaries above. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/golden_state.htm
What's funnier is... didn't we learn our lesson when we drafted him in '97? I guess "vet centers willing to cover Murphy + poor perimeter defender's butts 24/7" must come at a premium. I'm not saying Foyle is an awesome all-around defender, but having a big guy that can block shots like its nothing is pretty sweet to have. We all saw the alternative with Clif Robinson playing center... ouch... and I think the world of Clif Robinson in terms of an old vet that can still play the game and do other things like pass, play smart, sucker people into making mistakes, take big shots and defend. But the money dealt was huge... It's like saying, "I just bought a pinto for $20,000!" Wrong time to fall off the wagon, Mullin... If anybody is making fun of rookie coaches, check out our rookie GM in 2004. A lot of bad stuff happening now can be traced from back there and it has less to do with the coaching selection and more to do with the guys we're rolling with in our starting rotation. It just won't compete well in the Western Conference because where the heck is our defense and our inside game and our free throw shooting and our ability to create offense and play physical? There's just no pieces that fit. It's just a collection of offensive role players and maybe a few nearly well-rounded, but yet highly flawed stars playing on the outside. Also, our bench is good on paper, but way way worse compared to the older vet bench of 2003 and maybe some of early '04. Guys were so bad we should have just played Ike and Ellis more, but I'm not going to question why guys like Jerry Sloan, Larry Brown and a few other coaches who don't play rookies for a reason. It's not because they are stupid or want to lose, it's something else that the player and the coach understand and we fans don't. Plus, I believing in "hiding" our good players so teams don't start making offers when we're too over the budget to re-sign our own guys, despite having bird rights.
Food for thought: It's teams like us that drive the league salary up and up because we keep losing and we have to find some way to attract some players here or to retain them... It's sad... It's sad we can't draft an entire starting five that will be ready all together at the same time at some point in time. Gotta start dealing for some good player packages... just like how the Pistons and the Pacers and the Mavs got big.
Good news for Monta and Taft is that because we signed them for 3 years instead of 2 years, and that means we will gain Bird right for those two players. So, unlike Arenas situation, where Arenas signed for two years and didn't get a bird right, we can sign them as much as we want, and we do not have to worry about our MLE. Now for bad news... As you can see our salary is at $57 mils level without Dunleavy's extension, and that means, once Dunelavy's 9 mils per year/5 years kicks in (plus signing 1st rounders), our salary for next year will increase to 65 mils level, easily top 10 in the league. That's why the ticket price went up significantly despite with extremely disappointing season. And, it only gets worse. For next 3 years, no big contract expires, and Davis, Richardson, Dunelavy, Murphy, Foyle, and Fisher's contracts alone will cost at least 65 mils for next 3 years. If we include minor contracts like rookie ones, it will easily go over 70 mils and potentially 75 mils. First, I seriously doubt that Cohan will pay 75 mils + luxury tax to begin with. And, that means if we maintain our salary structure, we have to let Pietrus, Biedrins, Ellis and Taft go simply because we can't afford them. And, if things goes worse, we may have to dump Davis or Richardson's contracts for nothing like how we dumped Jamison, just to meet our financial goal. That's why I would like to dump Fisher and/or Murphy when we can, despite it will not do much good for our overall talent. Because if we don't, things can get REALLY ugly after next season. For Mullin... Well, what can I say more? So many fans still didn't realize how much damage Mullin did in one year span, and I think people are slowly finding out. The only good ending I can think of is a blockbuster trade, which brings a superstar big man with our existing assets, because even if our young stars turn out to be a superstar, we simply can't resign them at our current situation. And, we may possibly repeat Arenas situation, and the only difference is that this time we actually have a bird right and sign them technically, but due to our financial problem, we had to him go...
We might be able to dump Foyle on Denver or Toronto. Denver needs a backup center and so does Toronto. Both will probably pursue Nene so the loser gets a Foyle sandwhich.
Well, I highly doubt they will do that because of the same reason why we will not accept J. James from NY even though we also have a serious problem at center position...
Man nobody wants Foyle because of his joke of a contract. He's a fine backup, but his pay says he's a starter. He's got 4 guaranteed years and he gets paid 9-10 mil just about. Luckily that last year has a team option which the Warriors probably won't exercise unless they feel they can use him as an expiring contract in that exercised option year.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting custodianrules2:</div><div class="quote_post">Man nobody wants Foyle because of his joke of a contract. He's a fine backup, but his pay says he's a starter.</div> Nope... his pay says he's an all-star.
Why do the Warriors keep giving this guy a chanche. He is one of the worst players to set foot on a basketball court.
The more important question VC, is why do the Warriors ownership keep hiring management that keeps putting the Warriors in these type of predicaments with salary and inadequate talent... We've got good players, but none that fit toward the team game or solving chemistry problems and we've got a lot of inconsistencies and weak talent at certain starting five positions (plus a weak bench).
