Coach Doc Rivers said Ray agreed to join the staff as an assistant yesterday.

The Celtics job would mark O'Brien's first foray into the NBA.

O'Brien would bring welcome experience from the college ranks, where he started as an assistant at Connecticut, then coached at St. Bonaventure, BC, and Ohio State. The Celtics would look to O'Brien to help develop their players. Most of the Celtics' talented youngsters would still be in college if they had not entered the draft after high school or spent limited time in college.

Not oh well, actually, this guy has made some great things happen for teams that weren't necessarily anything to write home about. He took Scoonie and BC to the tournament a couple times, and then he took Scoonie and Ken Johnson and company to the Final Four as well, this guy is no slouch.

I loved some of the teams he put on the floor in the 90's. Ideally suited to the position of coddling younger players, he should prove useful on our squad as well.

Only thing is, how many fans will remember him getting driven out of town when he went to OSU? He definitely wasn't anyone's favorite, and I strongly doubt those that remember will take a shining to him. At least he won't be the head assistant, and have to deal with the press. If he signed as a consultant I would see a lot more use for him, but Clifford Ray is probably making that an impossibility with his salary. At least Ainge et al. are showing an interest in making these young players work, by signing the best at what they do, and I definitely consider O'Brien one of those guys.
