R & B Thread Who are some of your favorite R & B artist/groups Old School: Stevie Wonder (I love Stevie...no homo...lol) Al Green (not the biggest fan, but I like my fair share of his songs) Lionel Richie (see Al Green) Late 80's / Early 90's: Babyface (extremely underrated singer, songwriter, producer, and buisnessman) R. Kelly (the old R. Kelly before he started wearing masks and molesting children.....I'm talkin 12 Play R. Kelly........not trapped in the closet R. Kelly) Boyz II Men (Boyz II Men was IT) 112 (they've fallen off as of late, but I love their older material) D'Angelo (I wish he would get off the drugs, because D'Angelo can make that good soul music) Joe (always been a fan) Lauryn Hill (oh yes.) New School: *crickets chirping* there are some fairly new people I like (Musiq, Floetry, Alicia Keys, etc.).....but as of the past couple of years not that many come to mind
I love R&B just as much as rap Old school: Chaka Khan, KCI and Jojo, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye New School: Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Monica, Aaliyah
Some R&B people I really like right now are Ne-Yo, Mario (a little), City High, Usher, Kanye West (I like the guy), and R. Kelly.
I love R&B as much as I love rap. My favourites are Usher, Michael Jackson, and Trey Songz. At the moment, I'm listening to Joe and D'Angelo's Brown Sugar.
I actually like Alicia Key's music just as much as I like the Chili's actually. She's got to be my favorite female musician of all-time; maybe my favorite musician period. She's more of a "neo-soul" genre if you want to get technical, like Joss Stone, who's another favorite of mine who could fit in this category if you include Keys. Lauryn Hill is also a genius, although I loved her work with the Fugees a lot better. *Plays "Doo Woop" (That Thing)*
this should be in the hip hop section IMO. but some of the r&b artists i like as of now are neyo, bobby valentino, r kelly, chris brown (yes i like him), stevie wonder
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Brian:</div><div class="quote_post">this should be in the hip hop section IMO. </div> Beats (though not necessarily raps) in hip hop are almost always in 4/4 time. At its rhythmic core, hip hop swings: instead of a straight 4/4 count (pop music; rock 'n' roll; etc.), hip hop is based on an anticipated feel somewhat similar to the "swing" emphasis found in jazz percussion. Like the triplet emphasis in swing, hip hop's rhythm is subtle, rarely written as it sounds (4/4 basic; the drummer adds the hip hop interpretation) and is often played in an almost "late" or laid back way. This style was innovated predominantly in soul and funk music, where beats and thematic music were repeated for the duration of tracks. In the 1960s and 1970s, James Brown (known as The Godfather of Soul) talked, sang, and screamed much as MCs do today. This musical style provides the perfect platform for MCs to rhyme. Hip hop music generally caters to the MC for this reason, amplifying the importance of lyrical and delivering prowess. Instrumental hip hop is perhaps the lone exception to this rule. In this hip hop subgenre, DJs and producers are free to experiment with creating instrumental tracks. While they may mix in sampled rap vocals, they are not bound by traditional hip hop format. - wikipedia So basically, Hip-Hop has it's roots in Soul which is where R&B has it's roots, but they're two different genres. Just because they're both predominantly black genres though, they tend to get lumped into the same category, when they're separate types of music. However, if you want to get real technical about it, I guess that if you consider "hip-hop" to be a cultural influence, then R&B can be categorized as a "hip-hop" type of music, but from a purely musical point of view, they're different.

i use to be a huge rap fan that i got into r&b and i cant listen to rap unless its like a mellow flow or something by nas biggie or jay z but anyways anything by 112 and jagged edge is good, for the ones now i really like kanye even though everyone considers him rap, trey songz, neyo, also donell jones is real good too
