Comes now three university professors with a new algorithm to that measures a player's "wins produced"...and therefore value to their teams. The profs, from the University of California, William & Mary, and University of Sioux Falls, say Kevin Garnett is No. 1, producing 26.5 wins; followed by Jason Kidd at 23.7; Shawn Marion at 22.6; Lebron James at 20.4; and Ben Wallace, at 20.1. Let them explain it all to you in Saturday's New York Times and their new book, "The Wages of Wins". Source http://www.wagesofwins.com/ cool stuff, this is also in the nets forum, but with kg being number one, i thought it should be here too. I dont really understand how they do this, but it must be right if KG is number one
Before you get to excited, keep in mind that by the same method they found Allen Iverson to be the 91st best player in the league during his MVP season. Now, I don't think he was even close to deserving the MVP that season over Shaq, but 91st is a little ridiculous.

Quoting NbaBaller:

Not questioning you at all, but do you have a link to the article?
Check out the New Yorker review of the book. The book is not kind to Iverson. I've seen the "91st" figure on the internet. Just google "iverson wages of wins 91st". The book refers to two stats -- Win Score and Wins Produced. Wins Produced is more detailed and precise and allegedly can return the number of wins a player produced for the team during the season. Win Score is a simplified version that can be used to quickly rate how much a player did in a given game to help his team win (or lose). The formula is simply: Win Score = PTS + REB + STL - FGA - TO + 0.5*(AST + BLK - FTA - PF) They contend that, through their research, a point, rebound, steal, field goal attempt, and turnover (in absolute terms) has the same "value". And the others (assists, blocks, free throw attempts, and personal fouls) have less value. Thus, they derive the above formula for quick calculations. When I apply this simplified formula for all players in the 2000-2001 season, here is how they rank in total Win Scores over the season (top 120 players):
CODE

PlayerTeamGPWS
o'neal,shaquill lal741098.5
wallace,bendet801053.5
garnett,kevinmin811048.5
duncan,timsan821003
mutombo,dikembephi75985
nowitzki,dirkdal82959.5
marion,shawnpho79944
weatherspoon,cl cle82874
malone,karluta81816.5
mcdyess,antonioden70816
webber,chrissac70800.5
robinson,davidsan80792.5
mason,anthonymia80791
camby,marcusnyk63784
abdur-rahim,sha van81756
allen,raymil82750
outlaw,charlesorl80745
wallace,rasheedpor77743.5
francis,stevehou80719
brown,p.j.cha80702
mcgrady,tracyorl77700.5
brand,eltonchi74694.5
o'neal,jermaineind81684
davis,antoniotor78679
kidd,jasonpho77677
walker,antoinebos81675.5
divac,vladesac81653
lewis,rashardsea78650
marshall,donyel uta81645
lafrentz,raefden78623.5
pierce,paulbos82622.5
grant,brianmia82610.5
carter,vincetor75610
odom,lamarlac76606
bradley,shawndal82604
oakley,charlestor78591
davis,dalepor81590
stockton,johnuta82580
stojakovic,pred sac75579.5
jamison,antawngsw82578.5
payton,garysea79576
johnson,ervinmil82571.5
smith,michaelwas79554
grant,horacelal77552
brandon,terrellmin78541
davis,baroncha82541
lynch,georgephi82538
armstrong,darre orl75531.5
mashburn,jamalcha76527.5
szczerbiak,wall min82522.5
bryant,kobelal68522
hill,tyronephi76518
robinson,glennmil76515.5
miller,andrecle82514
finley,michaeldal82512.5
hoiberg,fredchi74491.5
campbell,eldencha78491
christie,dougsac81491
williams,aaronnjn82491
bibby,mikevan82487.5
thomas,kurtnyk77480.5
jackson,marknyk83480
miller,reggieind81466.5
anderson,dereksan82456.5
olajuwon,hakeemhou58451.5
howard,juwandal81442
nash,stevedal70439
pollard,scotsac77433.5
cassell,sammil76432.5
mobley,cuttinohou79429
posey,jamesden82416
ewing,patricksea79414.5
ellis,laphonsomin82414.5
vanexel,nickden71414
ratliff,theophi50412.5
miles,dariuslac81409.5
wells,bonzipor75408.5
patterson,rubensea76403.5
willis,kevinden78403.5
pippen,scottiepor64403
blaylock,mookiegsw69402
rose,jalenind72401
barry,brentsea67398
white,jahidiwas68396
mckie,aaronphi76384.5
stoudamire,damo por82382.5
potapenko,vital bos82382.5
russell,bryonuta78379
jones,eddiemia63378
wright,lorenzenatl71373
fox,ricklal82372
miller,bradchi57369.5
clark,keontor81368
martin,kenyonnjn68364.5
marbury,stephonnjn67359.5
williams,jerometor59357
ostertag,greguta81355
reeves,bryantvan75349.5
iverson,allenphi71347.5
smith,stevepor81343.5
mcinnis,jefflac81342
thomas,timmil76341
best,travisind77341
laettner,christ was78338
stith,bryantbos78328.5
miller,mikeorl82326.5
williams,alvintor82325.5
foyle,adonalgsw58324
smith,joedet69324
anderson,shando hou82323.5
williams,scottmil66322.5
foster,jeffind71321
sabonis,arvydaspor61316
terry,jasonatl82312.5
thomas,kennyhou74312
kukoc,toniatl65311
porter,terrysan80311
jackson,marcgsw48305
blount,coriegsw68304.5
piatkowski,ericlac81304.5

I have him ranked 99 on this list, going by Win Scores. There's a significant bias towards big men/rebounders. Now, for Wins Produced apparently they make some adjustments for each position to move guards and SFs up higher in the rankings (they're rationale for doing this, beyond simply making the list more credible, escapes me). So, maybe after the adjustments Iverson fairs a bit better. Still, I don't think they would consider him one of the great players in the game, even in his MVP season.
