This article says that the TV ratings are up.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">ESPN.com - Ratings for the first two games of the the NBA finals between Miami and Dallas were up 13 percent for ABC in comparison to last year's championship series with San Antonio and Detroit.

The second game of the series on Sunday night, which Dallas won 99-85, drew an average rating of 8.0 -- a 17 percent increase from 2005.</div>

not to get all racial but it does make a difference when one of the featured guys in the finals has blond hair. . . .

^^^hmmmm....I don't know about that one homie.....and I consider myself a pretty socially conscious black man.

    EDIT

I'm not denying that there isn't racism in professional sports, I just think this isn't the best example of it.

A provable statistical difference, or just one made up in your head to explain why more people are interested in the finals this year as opposed to last year when one of your favorite teams was involved? Because surely it doesn't have anything to do with a more crowd friendly style of up tempo play between the two would-be champions this year.

my guess is that it's one of the factors,
    note that i didn't say that's a bad thing
I just think it's one of the factors.
ANother factor is Shaq. People who know NOTHING about NBA know who the Shaq Daddy is.

Honestly, that's complete BS. The difference is, the Finals this year is not two teams against each other with boring styles of play. The Spurs and the Pistons don't appeal to the average sports fan, the fan that only watches the NBA in the playoffs, the fan that only watches the finals, the fans that aren't die hard fans like 99% of this board.

This years' Finals involve two teams that can score in bunches, offense...something the average fan likes. That's why the finals are up. And then you factor in Shaq.

How popular do you think Dirk Nowitzki is in the US? Outside of Dallas, I can't imagine he has that great a following.

These Finals are getting better ratings because of Shaq and Wade, not Dirk.

Maybe the fact of two different teams then last year , two succesful coaches, superstars like Shaq, Dirk, Wade etc, can all factor in why ratings are up.

I for one will be honest. I have watched a total of about 5 minutes of this years finals. I hate both teams and have better things to do.

Wow, I can't imagine notwatching the finals. Even if I utterly despised both teams. I just enjoy watching no matter what. Even if they were showing a Portland vs. Hawks game I'd be watching if possible. I dunno I guess it's just differences in the importance of watching.

Even though my team is out (spurs) i find myself watching the finals. Last nights game and game 4 were the best that i have seen in this series, i hate it when the other team is blowing out the other team in any finals match. I wish that Dallas was a eastern team and the spurs in the west so we could have the excitment of round two all over again.
