<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">National Basketball Association uniforms sport the team?s city or nickname across the chest. At the right price, though, some team executives would insert corporate logos such as McDonald?s Corp. ?s Golden Arches or Nike Inc. ?s Swoosh instead. The NBA ? alone among American sports leagues ? bans all advertising on its uniforms, even from Reebok International Ltd., which has a 10-year, $200 million contract to outfit the league. Top European soccer clubs get about $20 million a year for a jersey sponsorship, while teams in other countries get less. And NASCAR drivers are walking billboards, while their cars ? from bumper to bumper ? are plastered with product logos. Now Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and New Jersey Nets Chief Executive Brett Yormark are among team executives who say it?s time to stop treating uniforms as commercial-free zones. With the average player?s salary approaching $5 million a year and television and sponsorship money reaching a plateau, the league should consider sponsorships as a new source of revenue, they say. "If it were up to me, they would already be there," Cuban, whose $87 million payroll this season was second only to the New York Knicks, said in an email interview</div> Source
It'd be a bitch to buy jerseys. One of the reasons I don't buy soccer jerseys is that the advertisers usually switch every year. I'm really against this whole idea. That Rbk/Nike logo at the corner is all the advertising that should be on jerseys.
Wait, are these for logos on jerseys for people to buy or for the jerseys the actual players wear in the NBA?
Hell No. NBA != Nascar, and havfe youse en the way they turn out in the European leagues? Acceptable, but still horrendous. In some hockey leagues they allow it and it looks terrible. MAYBE, on the warmup jackets and shooting shirts, but even then, only one company per jersey., similar to soccer jerseys(except the company on the back), because atleast soccer jerseys are tasteful in the way they do it. The way that the NBA has done it right now is perfect. As of now, there is no branding on any players, even the accessories which are either just branded with nicknames or the NBA's logo(I think it's a bit stupid to just have the NBA logo on accessories and the such, but that's a bit different). The only branding we see on jeresys is on the jock tag. There is no visible Nike or RBK...or now in this case will not be any adidas branding on the atuhentic jerseys. We only see them on replicas, and even then it is very minimalistic. If the league allows avertising, IMO, the first step will be allowing adidas to brand the three stripes on all NBA jerseys, however that will command a ton of money.
I don't see what's wrong with it. Soccer team have logos of their supportive companies. Like Chelsea has Samsung, umm...I can't remember another tho lol
I can understand what they're saying, but I agree with you guys, that it shouldnt be allowed. Our basketball league down here (the NBL) allows jersey advertising, and the jerseys are stockpiled with ad's, it looks disgusting.
This would suck. Because eventually the MLB, NFL and all other american leagues would have ads to, and thats what i think seperates american sports from other countries. The unique, ad-less jerseys. I see all these European teams jersey and there ugly as hell with just a companys logo and a plain color...
from the same article: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">NBA Commissioner David Stern, speaking in a telephone interview, said for the first time that he would consider on-uniform advertising. "I don’t doubt it will eventually happen, but at a price that recognizes that value," he said, adding that NBA teams would need to be paid more than their soccer counterparts in Europe and elsewhere.</div> so basically theyre telling us is inevitable and that its only a matter of time before you take the kids out to see the Detroit Pepsi's battle against the Dallas Microsofts!
Will be a sad day in the NBA when advertisment is on jerseys. Players will be living, breathing billboards. Sad, very sad.
