I hate this pick. Projects really piss me off. Especially three in a row at the same position. I understand it makes money sense but wow i'm pissed.
I said this about Petro last year, too, but with the number 10 pick overall and quality players on the board???? What were they thinking? They must have some quality recreational substances in their system... Can anybody remind me why I like this team? I am sure I will remember but, for now...We should just try and trade Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis for a handful of severely overpaid benchwarmers in the last year of their contracts, take a pass on the team options for all players with options and send everyone down to the D-League while forfeiting the season to save money. Then they can declare bankruptcy and escape paying the city anything else on the Key Arena lease.
I think I can definitely say that Sene was the player i wanted the least in the entire draft. Carney was there, Brewer was there... I really don't get the management.
Normally I'd be upset with picking a prospect in a position that we've drafted the past two years but with this current group of talent I don't think that there was anyone on the board that was capable of breaking in to our rotation. With this pick it makes both Swift and Petro players that we could possibly include in a trade down the road--especially if they continue to progress the way that they have. No way in the world will we be able to afford both of those players once their contracts are up and by picking Sene we have some insurance in the event that one of them ends up leaving when their contract is up or if one of them happens to be included in a trade that significantly upgrades our talent. Plus there is no doubt that he can be one of the premier shot blockers in this league at some point if given the minutes. I saw the Hoop Summit and he definitely was impressive to the point where the premier high school players in USA were highly intimidated when they went to the rim. He blocked 9 shots that game but it seemed like he blocked 15. Everyone is mad b/c we picked a center for the 3rd consecutive year but in our current state we will never get a top notch big unless we draft one. Our interior defense was horrendous last year and he is more than capable of being a defensive presence in this league. If someone can name someone in the draft that was picked after the 9th pick that was capable of logging 20+ minutes a game for our roster next season and capable of being a true impact player for our team then argue your point extensively in this forum. Otherwise, trust the judgment of Sund and Pendergraft and know that we did not miss out on anyone that could instantly break into our rotation by making this pick. Tongue twister of the draft: Seattle Supersonics select Senegals Saer Sene.
I don't mind it for a few reasons. - Seven footers are a rare commodity, and people will overpay for them, whether that be through trade or free agency. - We are not going to challenge for a title in the next few years, and Carney is probably the only guy who could have stepped in and had the potential to become a go to guy. Brewer will be a role player in the pros IMO. - If all three develop and become quality players, we are in a very strong position in regards to listening to trade offers. I don't have a problem with it to be honest, although I would have liked Carney.
The other thing to look at is Sene's development in the last couple of years, where he's gone from not even knowing how to shoot a lay-up to someone who is dominating the inside defensively at the Hoops Summit. Bear in mind the progress Swift and Petro have made under Sikma's tutelage, and it's an exciting trio.
7'0 with a 7'9 wingspan, and he runs the floor like a deer. Very raw, but reports say his work ethic and personality is terrific, and we can leave him in Europe if necessary given he still has two years left on his contract in Belgium.
I like the Denham Brown pick, whenever I watched a UConn game he seemed to make some good plays. That being said, the only thing that keeps me optimistic is that Gelebale will be coming over.

7.8 PPG and 3.5 RPG in Euroleage doesn't exactly sound NBA ready to me. Brewer is more NBA ready than either Sene or Gelabale and would probably make a bigger impact playing for the Sonics.
It's like Shiek said, since there was no pick on the board that would've impacted the roster next season the Sonics took the guy with the most potential. If he turns out to be good, they can either move Petro to PF or trade somebody. Unless Brewer or Carney break out in a big way, they wouldn't have helped the Sonics win much more than this past season.

Fact is Gelabale was a starter and a defensive stopper on one of the strongest teams in Europe. It would make absolutely no sense for management to buy him out if they didn't think he could contribute this season, given the franchise's financial state, and I'll trust Rick Sund over you or myself.
