Redick (6’4”, 190, 6/24/84) is the all-time leading scorer in both Duke University and Atlantic Coast Conference history with 2,769 points (16th in NCAA history). Redick shot .406 (457-of-1,126) from three-point range and .912 (662-of-726) from the free throw line. Redick was named Wooden, Naismith and Associated Press Player of the Year following his senior season in 2005-06. He set an NCAA record for career three-pointers made (457) and finished second in NCAA history in free throw percentage (.912). Redick was named ACC Player of the Year and First Team All-America for the second straight season, after averaging 26.8 ppg. and shooting .421 (139-of-330) from three-point range. He also earned ACC Tournament MVP for the second straight time. As a junior (2004-05), Redick averaged 21.8 ppg. He was named Rupp National Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year, and also earned ACC Tournament MVP honors. Redick led the ACC in scoring, free throw percentage (.938), minutes played (37.3 minpg.) and three-point field goals per game (3.7). He led Duke and was ninth in the ACC with a .403 (121-of-300) from three-point land. During his sophomore campaign (2003-04), Redick was named All-ACC First Team after leading the Blue Devils in scoring (15.9 ppg.) and three-point field goals made (102). He led the ACC and ranked second in the nation with a .953 (143-of-150) free throw percentage. Redick became only the fifth player in Duke history (22nd in ACC history) to reach 1,000 career points. As a freshman (2002-03), Redick was named to the All-ACC Third Team and All-ACC Freshman Team. He averaged 15.0 ppg., the fourth-highest by a Duke freshman. Redick led the Blue Devils in free throw percentage (.919, 5th in NCAA), three-point field goals made (95) and attempted (238).</div> Source <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Strengths: One of the purest shooters anywhere ... Redick has a beautiful outside stroke that creates fear in the eyes of opponents ... He possesses incredible range and routinely takes shots well beyond the three point line. He's a player that you simply can't leave open anywhere within the area code of the basket ... He has also added a deadly mid range game to his repertoire, with the ability to create shots for himself with ball fakes and the dribble drive … Unbelievable at rolling off screens and hitting the open J ... Redick has picture perfect form, a lightning quick release and gets great elevation on his shot. He is also automatic from the free throw line ... Has a killer instinct and seems to step his game up in clutch situations ... Never appears tired, has great conditioning and work ethic ... Weaknesses: Doesn't have great size or athleticism for the 2 at the next level ... He doesn't possess the ball handling or passing skills to run the point … He can be streaky at times, but he's on more often than not … His defense will also need work as he lacks both size and strength ... Must prove he can score against elite level athletes ... Not a freak athlete, but his quickness and agility is better than it looks...</div> Source Pretty much everything under his strengths has to do with shooting.
dude seriously, why all the hate. he is a very good scorer. not just shooter, he scores. he may not be dunking the ball or anything, but he puts the ball in the bucket.

We should've traded to Houston our 11th pick for 8th, we would've had Gay. <font color=""Red"">-Watch the language. Swish15</font>
Now befor I start I know, GatorsowntheSEC well come over here chewin me out, lol. But bare with me. JJ reddick is NOT a bad pick at ALL imo. Think about it. Who was the best shooter in the NCAA? Reddick. Who's becoming an all star that demnads a double team? Dwight Howard. Dwight gets doubled it's a fact. I've heard people saying that he doeesnt have the need for a double team but those people don't watch the game i guess. Just imagine, "Dwight gets doubled, dishes it to Reddick for 3!!" lol Plus with a lot of big bodies on the floor such as Darko Dwight and even Turkoglu. There are many possibilites for plays invovling picks to free up Reddick for open shot. Look lets face it. Reddick is a shooter. So why not use that to our advantage?
Redick is a shooter who can only produce on offense. Drafting an all offensive player is good if you intend to make him a main scorer and have someone who can pick up the slack on defense. Redick will either be the third option on offense or come off the bench. Also, I doubt we draw up plays for Redick like Coach K did for him at Duke. As far as the person to pick up the defensive slack, we don't have that either. DeShawn is opting out and we don't really have a lock down guy right now (especially in our starting lineup). Like I said before, I'll give him a chance and hopefully he can produce and score but I think we could have done better.

JJ will not only START he will be a great asset to the team. Ok yeah he's not a greadt defender, but I mean he's not gonna let az defender just blow right past him. I mean 1.5 steals a game isnt that bad. And why on earth wouldnt we draw up plays for him? What's the point of having a player and not utilizing his talents? Whether it him running through the key through 2 picks for the open look. Or dwight dishing it when double teamed, OR even having The magic's 3 headed monster of PGs driving and penetrating to the hoop and dishing it to reddick. We've all agreed in previous threads that Jameer is great, but he should work on his habit of score fist pass second. If he perfects this problem...watch out. Having Reddick causes all types of problems for the ooposing team as well. If the man is on fire lighting up the score board with his shooting, think about what happens when REDDICK gets doubled. JJ is definelty the type of player who can pass it out of the double for an assist. If Dick Vitale loves the pick. Then I LOVE the pick! ***Oh and swish, I bet your view change about him as soon as you get that interview, haha.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">J.J. REDICK Q: Talk about going to Orlando. Redick: Obviously really excited. This is one of the teams that I circled as a destination that I would really be happy about. I'm really looking forward to playing with some great young players down there. Q: It seemed as if you knew that you were going to be picked by Orlando there. When did you know; did you suspect they were going to pick you? Redick: I had a good idea for a few days now, nothing for sure. And I found out that it was pretty definite on the way over here. Q: Obviously very impressive Orlando Magic team. What are you going to bring to Orlando, and, of course, how is the back? Redick: Well, first of all, I think I'm going to bring shooting. I think that's one of the needs that they expressed to me. And I'm also going to bring some intangibles, just my competitive spirit, my desire to win, all that good stuff. And as far as the back is concerned, I've been pain free now for two weeks. I've gotten very good reports back from my doctors, and if you want, I can bend down and touch my toes for you guys. (Laughter). Q: After all that's been going on the past few weeks; how much of a relief is it to still go this high? Redick: Oh, I mean, it's a huge relief. To be honest with you, I kind of had a revelation today before I knew for sure that I was going to Orlando that no matter where I went, you know, it's still a dream come true and not to get caught up in where I was going. The past few weeks have definitely been a tough time for me. Some of it I brought on myself, some of it was unfortunate. I'm sure you guys can figure out which one was which. I'm just glad to be through this process and start moving on to the next part of my career. Q: You went through a very good college career, very good school. Did it bother you that all of the J.J. Redick stories were either about that incident or health issues, when you do all of this good work and it just seems to come down to this at this point, was it frustrating? Redick: You know, to be honest with you, the past couple weeks haven't been frustrating because I felt like I brought that upon myself. A lot of people have written about the DWI and I'm sure fans for a while will make references to that, so I brought that upon myself. But I felt like even before those incidents happened and my back was hurt, I was getting a lot of negative publicity and most people felt like I wasn't going to be a good pro. I'm going to use that just like I used all of the criticism I received in my life, just as fuel to add to the fire. Q: Now that Grant Hill has been playing for the Orlando Magic the past few years, has he told you anything about playing in the NBA? Redick: Me and Grant have had several conversations, but to be honest with you, I haven't talked to him since April when I was choosing an agent and I was considering his agent. I definitely think that's going to be a guy that I lean on early in my career. That's a great resource that we already have, especially since we already have a relationship. Q: It's a young team you're going to Jameer Nelson, Darko; talk about this youth movement, it certainly sounds like a great future? Redick: Yeah, that's one of the reasons I wanted to go to Orlando was because they had Jameer Nelson and Dwight Howard and Darko. I feel like as those guys improve and become bonafide superstars in this league, that will only help my game and my improvement. </div> http://www.insidehoops.com/nba-draft-interviews.shtml

On offense Jameer, JJ, Hedo would be one of the top offensive groups in the league, but on defense they are bottom 3 no ifs ands or buts about it. JJ will be a defensive nightmare for opposing coaches to have to defend, BUT you will see A LOT of 110-109 type ball games because we wouldn't be able to stop anyone. Not only will we not be able to stop anyone that will get Darko and Dwight in foul trouble and that would ruin the entire momentum of the game. I'm overexaggerating Redick's lack of defense for sure(I'm not saying Redick and Jameer are horrible) just having Jameer and Redick together would be horrible. Name one team that a 5'11 PG and a 6'4 shooter could guard effectively. I can't think of any that wouldn't cause matchup problems for them. Like what someone else said(either in this thread or another thread) Redick will put up 12 points, but give up 15. On our roster JJ is best suited coming off of the bench and playing alongside Arroyo and Ariza(a distributing PG and a defensive minded wing) rather than an offensive minded SF and shoot first PG, IMO. We will definetely run plays for him, you wouldn't just have him in there and not give him opportunities to shoot. If he is in the game I want him to shoot. Too many of you guys are underestimating the importance of defense. Mavs ran up and down the court and scored so many points, but they didn't advance to the Finals until they got a defense. Suns haven't been to the Finals with their uptempo score and play defense. The Spurs/Pistons/Heat won because of their defense, not the offense. I'm definetely not denying that on the offensive end Redick was probably the best fit for our team, but I would rather have someone like Brewer who could help a team win a game if his shots aren't falling. I don't think Redick has the all-around game to impact a game if he can't make shots. btw it's not Red Dick, it's Redick.

I think we need a defensive stopper at the small forward for this team to be perfect. We need a Bruce Bowen, Tayshaun Prince, or Josh Howard so that we can make up for Redick's defense.
