<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Atlanta Hawks, roundly criticized for bypassing Chris Paul in the 2005 NBA draft, addressed their void at point guard Monday by reaching a verbal agreement with Paul's backcourt mate: Speedy Claxton. Claxton's agent, Bill Duffy, told ESPN.com that Claxton has verbally agreed to sign with the Hawks on July 12, the first day free agent signings and trades can be made official. It is believed that Claxton will receive a four-year deal worth $25 million. </div> http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2508532 Obviously there is the problem of Claxton being injury prone, and likely to miss at least 10 games, but this is good for the Hawks. In my, and many other's opinions, Joe Johnson is better suited at SG, Atlanta also seemed to realize that last season. Claxton should help them as a distributor, and finally gives them an actual PG. The Hawks are looking to have a decent team: PG: Speedy Claxton | Tyronn Lue | Joe Johnson/Salim SG: Joe Johnson | Josh Childress | Salim Stoudamire SF: Josh Smith | Marvin Williams | Josh Childress PF: Shelden Williams | Josh Smith | Marvin Williams C: Zaza Pachulia | Shelden Williams There's also Ivey, but he won't play much anymore.
This seems like a good signing for both the Hawks and Speedy. He's wanted to be a starter for a very long time, he came to Golden State to start but then we got Van Exel, then we got Derek Fisher, then he went to NOH and had to play behind Paul. Hes been a very good backup PG but its nice to see him go to a place where he can start.
Great sign by Billy. Claxton is a good PG, and should make the Hawks better. If they can S & T Harrington in order to improve their bench, i expect them to improve a lot this season.
Good move but come on. This can't cover up the mistakes they made in the last 3 drafts, first passing up Jameer Nelson for Josh Smith then passing up Chris Paul and Deron Williams for Marvin Williams. The front court still needs some work, don't get your hopes up Hawks fans.
Only thing that the hawks are set at is SF with the million SF's they have, they could've gotten someone like Mike James, but I guess not. SPeedy is pretty good and I think he'll fit well with the Hawks but I dont know if he's a 6th man or starter player..
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting shapecity:</div><div class="quote_post">I guess the rationale here is, if you can't have Chris Paul you go after his backup.</div> I was just thinking that. But, good pickup overall, I think he can help us out by having a true point guard on the squad.
Nice signing. Finally they get a PG, even though he's injury prone, he should fit the team well. The Hawks should of tried to trade Childress to draft Marcus Williams on draft day.
Good move, now Atlanta has a legit starting point guard, pretty much a quality point guard. No more starting Royal Ivey!
This is likely the last move the Hawks will make this offseason unless they sign some guys to one year deals.
Good signing by the Hawks. This team looks like it could have a very talented starting 5 with a pretty good bench. I can see them improving a lot this upcoming season, but the playoffs could still be a big stretch.
If I played for the Hawks, I would try to throw this year and get the first pick. With Greg Oden put into that lineup, you would be a dynasty down the road.
