On the radio, it's been said that the Lakers have come to an agreement with a veteran PG, but Mitch is holding on the announcement. Serious rumors are swirling that it's former UNC guard, Shammond Williams. I don't know anything about him, except that he's supposed to have a decent jumper, and that's it. Can someone explain his game to me?
yup I heard the same thing on AM 570. They said they will announce it on July 12th and that it was a veteran point guard and he was not aquired through a trade.
He's a shoot-first combo guard. Streaky as hell. Good when he's on, absolutely terrible when he's not. He was one of those players that didn't have the court vision to be a point and didnt' have the size to be a 2. As a result, he's been a journeyman in the leauge. He was most remembered as the starting SG in that insane UNC team - Cota/Williams/Carter/Jamison. btw, defensively, from what I remember, he didn't play much of it.
if this is true, im pissed. we might as well resign chucky atkins. the guy is absolute trash IMO. shouldnt be anything more than a 12th man. he played overseas last year, so hopefully he improved his game. but overall, his game consists of taking threes and playing 0% defense.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Lakers are close to a deal with Shammond Williams, a 6-1 guard who has played with six NBA teams. They're trying to complete financial discussions with Williams' pro team in Spain. Williams, 31, has career averages of 6.1 points and 2.5 assists with several NBA teams and last played in the league in the 2003-04 season. They could sign Williams with their biannual exception, which allows teams that are over the salary cap to sign a player for about $3.5 million over two years. </div> link: http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpag...ne=67769&spln=1 well, lets welcome chucky atkins version 2.0
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting LO7:</div><div class="quote_post">The guy hasn't even put on a uniform and were already bashing him.</div> because he sucks
Probably want him because at this moment, our PG depth begins and ends with Farmar (don't care what you say, Sasha is a SG). He gives us some depth there, which is desperately needed. Plus, who else is there to sign that won't demand a lot of money or kill the development of Farmar?
With all this talk of getting a veteran PG plus the highly regarded Farmar does this mean Smush is possibly on the trading block?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Moo2K4:</div><div class="quote_post">Plus, who else is there to sign that won't demand a lot of money or kill the development of Farmar?</div> with all the expiring contracts we have (cook, luke, mckie, mihm),we could have traded for a point guard like chris duhon. of course mitch is too stupid to do anything of the sort. another option was to sign pargo, but instead mitch signs shammond, who, like i said, plays absolutely no defense and just likes to jack up three after three. just think of him like a chucky atkins with a worse shot. anyways, if anything, we shouldnt have wasted the money at all, and we could have saved the extra roster spot for someone like devin green or pinnock (who did well in his first game in SPL)
Trading any of those players (except maybe McKie), is the last thing this club needs. We trade Mihm, we lose size in our ever so thin frontcourt. We trade Luke, we lose probably the best and most creative passer on the team. By trading Cook we trade size and instant offense off the bench. I agree though, we might have been able to do better, but we have Mitch. Mitch has never been known to make all that many great moves, so to expect him to make a move to land someone like Duhon might be asking too much from him.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Brok3n:</div><div class="quote_post">With all this talk of getting a veteran PG plus the highly regarded Farmar does this mean Smush is possibly on the trading block?</div>I don't think Smush is on the block. He's currently the only PG on the roster that knows the triangle. I think the only reason we bring in Williams is for added depth. However, I'd much rather see someone like Luke Walton see more minutes there. He may not have the quicks to play it, but he'd create a matchup problem on defense and he's our best passer at this moment.
if the signing of shammond indeed is true, our roster will look something like this: C: Kwame, Mihm, Bynum PF: Odom, Cook, Turiaf SF: Vlad, Walton SG: Kobe, Evans, Sasha PG: Smush, Farmar, Mckie, Shammond thats already 15 players. which means 0 roster spot for anyone else in SPL (guys like pinnock, green, or wafer). so unless we trade away some players, this is how our roster will look like. everyone else will have to play in the NBDL. we wasted a roster spot IMO
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Trench:</div><div class="quote_post">A no name veteran point guard I've never heard of. Damn.</div> I wouldn't call him a 'no name.' He played for one of the most prestigious college basketball programs in the country (UNC). He was part of one of the more popular and well watched squads in the mid-late 90's that featured Antawn Jamison and Vince Carter, and he actually was the second leading scorer on that team behind Jamison and ahead of Carter. also, lets not call him a PG in a traditional sense. The Nuggets gave him a shot at trying to run the point at the end of the season a few years back and it didn't quite work out. However, the fact is the guy can flat out score and that was probably the Lakers motivation when they sign(ed) him. In the triangle, he won't be required to handle the ball or facilitate as much. Obviously, he isn't projected as a starter and I forsee his role as a spark plug off the bench. Like I mentioned above, he's streaky as hell though. That has a lot to do with his poor shot selection though. I was never a fan of his game but if we got him for a reasonable price, he'll give us some punch off the bench. Also, that Chucky Atkins comparison isn't that far off. But could we use that kind of player off the bench? sure why not?
Shammond Williams isn't a bad player, judging him from his days at UNC. The reason you haven't heard of him on the pro level yet is that he was a scoring point guard at UNC and just hasn't been able to score, consistantly, on the next level. Will he come in and average 15 a game? No. But will he come in and be a good pressence in the locker room for young guys like Jordan Farmar? Yes.
Contracts are usually given out in Summer Leagues, but often times they aren't guaranteed and the player might not even make the roster. I think this just means Shammond Williams will have a chance to join the pre-season roster. I wonder if this also signals the Lakers making a trade soon or does it mean Laron Profit might not be back?
