No one knows for sure, especially after the court ruling that Atlanta can't take on any multi-year deals, but most assume it's Troy Murphy or a combination of some of the expiring contracts we have (Keith McLeod, Mickael Pietrus, Zarko Cabarkapa, Devin Brown, Andre Owens). Theoretically it could work with us shipping Murphy because the teams can say that they've been negotiating the trade since before the court ruling, therefore ATL can take on Murphy's deal.

I don't think the judge ruling would matter if it is a sig and trade, it only applies to signing free agents. That being said Murphy wuld be the most logical player to be traded, eventhough I'm still holding hope that it would be Foyle.

I agree -- let's go Foye and Dunleavy for Childress and Harrington [IMG]

The big catch is we need to send out equal salay-or more-and what ATL can take may be real restricted. An uncapped team CAN sign Harrington with no involving the Hawks-and that may be a workaround. We could work a deal with Charlotte a broker. We could also do a deal where we give players-picks th Charlotte for G Wallace-and they keep Harrington-turning Wallace into-say-Pietrus-Taft-Harrington-W Bymum a rd 1 in 08 and maybe more. Only Atl is unhappy in that one. We might even get Ely in the deal too?

With the rather tough restrictions on ATL getting ANY payoff for AH-you figure the price is now a 25%off clearance. The Hawks have a 50% chance of getting ZERO

Harrington is an unrestricted NOW...so he's a FA. The exact terms of this mess may change as lawyers and factions hack away at each other. Harrington by then can sign,as an unrestricted-with whoever.
MOST teams would be able to sign him as a 1 year MLE. Some can up the price.,being undercap. Some teams MIGHT be able to do a direct S + T with ATL under the limitations-and the limitations may change at any point. What fun[IMG] [IMG]

I like Harrington's game. I wouldn't play him at the 4. He's too small for that spot and has never been known to be a great rebounder. I'd think one of Ike/Biedrins can grab 8 per at that spot.

The article never did note anything about the court hearing. I wonder how credible the article is.

Although the ruling said nothing about sign-and-trade, the logic is that Atlanta can't mount any contract longer than 1 year. So, I don't think Warriors can really trade Murphy to Hawks for sign-and-trade deal. But, either I am wrong, or maybe they can say this deal was in discussion like Speedy signing.

If we can't trade Murphy, we may trade whatever we received for Harrington for 3 way deals. Obviously, Harrington will not receive what he desires, which will be roughly 10 mils per year. But in given situation, some thing like 7.5 - 8 mils per year deal may not be that bad, because Harrington may be the biggest loser in that ruling. Or, if we are lucky enough, we may even get Harrington for MLE.

That has been said, do I want Harrington? It's hard to say. I mean, if we can flush Dunleavy, I would be all for it. But, since it's extremely unlikely, we will be stuck with about 18 mils per year in SF position for long time. And, if Harrington starts at SF and Diogu starts at PF, I won't have too much problem. But, considering how little Monty trust young players, it will very well be Dunleavy at SF and Harrington at PF. And, if so, I don't see much improvement, if any, with Harrington for Murphy signing.

Anyway, at least Mullin is trying to get potential reinforcement at SF, and that's good to know...

I'm guessing either Murphy and/or Pietrus is involved. It's a shame Pietrus doesnt get any burn in GS. He's a nice talent. Are th warriors shopping Davis? If not, they should be before his stock drops any lower.

I agree with Kwan's concern about Harrington being a possible blunder financially, especially if he only offers things in the way of scoring and not so much on teamwork or defensive skills or outside shooting.

One of the biggest problems this squad had was trying to find a secondary ballhandler that could actually do something with the ball to make others better or break down defenses. Once Baron was out, we tried Dunleavy/Zarko/Richardson to get various quickness matchups in our favor and there went our decisionmakers and ballhandlers after those three. Poof! Dfish couldn't do it so he was on the block, Monta Ellis wasn't ready for primetime point guard minutes, Pietrus is just plain retarded with the ball or in a "don't foul" situation. We were just a low % scoring team that couldn't find a way to keep the paint honest because we don't have any size down there.

Plus, like wtwalker mentioned in another thread, what makes us think signing the best available forward in this year's free agency won't end up being a repeat of a blunder like the Fisher/Foyle deals? It's about the right fit for a team and the flexibility to improve. Does Harrington address weaknesses like outside shooting or defense or ballhandling? What if Pietrus/Dunleavy rebound from their bad years? How much is Harrington asking for to come off the bench?

I just think it's not worth risking four or five years on another overpaid one-dimensional tweener who starts because of focus on the short term starters. If we can sign Harrington for cheap, great. But not for him to take away minutes from some starting guy we could get in next year's draft or some guy we could land for cheap at the trade deadline in February who could be a better fit. I'd rather have a 6'8 G/F than a 250 lb SF/PF.

We should already learn from Isiah Thomas that making a move to address the short term can be made into a long term problem, especially if we overpay. If we sign Harrington for 10 mil a year as starting SF and he's a terrible fit in every other way besides scoring, fans will be crying if somebody else comes along and we're stuck with two small forwards Mullin invested in and none of them work with the other players.

We have to think long term and not react to short term situations. Right now center is the only position that we have to wait on because there are few good big men available and there's no polished centers in the draft that fall to picks #9 and #11. We also don't land very many elite or polished big men because there are usually none that want to come here and it takes a talented player or another big man to land a big man sometimes. It's just the way it is. I can't stress how important it is to have big man dominance in the paint and the kind of guard play that can stretch or break down defenses to get everyone else inside and outside involved. The small forward position can kiss my bum until we fix the major problems with this franchise first. I don't see Dunleavy that high on the priority list of things to fix especially if he bounces back from his bad year. Consistency is a major issue, but he'll still help the offense/defense more than he hurts it. The pg that can't focus, shoot or stay healthy or pass the ball is a problem and so is the center that count do anything much outside of shotblocking or loyalty. Jrich and a hopefully consistent Dunleavy probably makes the most sense because they are players that should have swapped bodies... Jrich is a forward, Dunleavy is a guard. Both can be unselfish and make the right decisions. Just one is slower, lacks intensity and his shot sucks, but I'd rather have Dunleavy more than Foyle/Fish/Murphy and I absolutely dislike Dunleavy's performance. I like his skills on paper, but that's it.

Center...we have POB-Taft-Andy..3 real nice prospects-a big investment. We need to get them as far as possible as soon as possible---meaning they split C minutes, very little Foyle-no outside "hold the fort" patch,we commit to the future and make it work.

SF...I HAVE abandoned hope for Dunleavy. His inconsistancy is brutal and chronic. He does probably know what to do-he's got too little quickness to do it. Dun needs his perimeter J to be on-or his game pretty much comes unglued. Unfortunately-He's too streaky from 3,too low %. He sometimes relizes that it IS in FACT legal to shoot a J from 15 or 18..which he's more apt to make. Personally-I STILL feel Pietrus CAN learn a few of the details and emerge a star. I have come to expect that the W's will blow it and we'll see him elsewhere playing great. Pietrus-I have no doubt-can be VERY good D. I don't see Dun being above average at any thing.

Harrington won't play D like Pietrus..but neither does Dun. Harrington rebounds okay and he's a 15-20 pt scorer. Not bad. Perfect is not an option

I believe that's not a good analogy though, because we wouldn't be signing him long term. We wouldn't be adding anything to the payroll. We'd be replacing Troy's contract with his, and this swap is a gamble I'd be willing to take. Plus, I don't know how the contract thing works, but I believe a scenario is possible where GS could obtain the Bird Rights to Harrington via the sign-n-trade, which would mean we would have the option of going in a diferent direction if he dones't pan out. In this case the Warriors would have that $$ off the books quicker than if they kept Troy.

But I'm not sure how that works.
